Clean, cut and smooth-fit static privacy film onto a window pane in one sitting, no tools beyond a knife and squeegee.
PWF-01Clear the area and check the weatherMove curtains, blinds and anything on the windowsill out of the way. Work on a still, mild day with the window closed — direct sun makes the film tacky too fast, and a cold room stops it sticking properly. Give yourself at least an hour without interruptions.
PWF-02Check the glass is suitablePrivacy film goes onto flat, single-pane glass. It's not designed for the outer face of double glazing or for textured or wired glass — check your film's packaging for what it covers. Measure the pane's height and width in mm so you know how much film to cut.
PWF-03Clean the glass thoroughlyWash the pane with warm soapy water, then scrape off any stubborn marks with a plastic scraper — never a metal blade on glass. Dry the edges and frame with a lint-free cloth. Any dust, hair or grease left behind will show as a bump under the film.
PWF-04Measure and cut the filmCut the film roll about 20mm oversized on each side of your pane measurements, using a straight edge and your utility knife on a flat table. It's easier to trim off excess later than to fall short.
1 roll · Static privacy window film roll PWF-05Mix the application solutionFill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of mild washing-up liquid or baby shampoo. This soapy water lets you slide the film into place before it grips, and helps push bubbles out.
1 bottle · Mild washing-up liquid or baby shampoo PWF-06Wet the glass and peel the backingSpray the glass generously with the soapy solution. Peel the protective backing off the film slowly, spraying the sticky side as you go so it doesn't grab itself or trap dust.
PWF-07Position the film on the paneLift the film onto the wet glass and let it float into place — the soapy water lets you slide it around to line up the edges evenly. Leave the 20mm overhang running past the frame on all sides for now.
PWF-08Squeegee out the water and bubblesStarting from the centre, squeegee outwards to the edges in overlapping strokes, pushing water and air out from under the film. Go over it two or three times. Small bubbles at the edge are normal at this stage and will be trimmed off.
1 each · Felt-edged squeegee applicator PWF-09Trim the edges to fitRun your utility knife along the frame edge to trim off the 20mm overhang, using light pressure and several passes rather than one hard cut. Squeegee the newly cut edges down firmly so they don't lift.
PWF-10Let it cure and tidy upLeave the window undisturbed for at least 24 hours — don't wipe or clean it during this time, as the film is still bonding and drying out any remaining moisture. Wipe down your tools and dry the windowsill before putting curtains or blinds back.
