Childproof a home: what actually helps

Fit the safety gear that actually stops injuries: gates, anchored furniture, socket and corner protection, done safely on any wall type.

CP-01Walk round the home and list the real hazardsGo room to room at toddler height (get down on your knees) and note stairs, low sockets, sharp furniture corners, unlocked cupboards with cleaning products, wobbly furniture, and windows a child could open. Prioritise stairs, poisons, and anything tall enough to fall on a child - these cause the most serious injuries. Buy fixings and kit before you start so you're not stopping halfway through.
CP-02Fit socket covers or check your sockets are already safeMost UK sockets made since the 1990s have shuttered outlets that block small objects automatically, so covers are a low-priority extra rather than a must-have. If you still want them, push-fit covers simply plug into the socket - no tools, no drilling. Check you can still get them out easily yourself; some cheap ones jam.

CP-03Fit cupboard and drawer locksFit adhesive strap locks on cupboards with cleaning products, medicines, or knives - clean the surface with a damp cloth first and let it dry fully so the pad sticks. For heavy daily-use cupboards, screw-fixed magnetic locks last longer; drill a 2mm pilot hole into the cabinet door and frame (not the wall) and screw the catch and magnet in place. Test the lock holds under a firm pull before you let a child near it.

CP-04Fit corner and edge guards on sharp furnitureAdd foam corner guards to glass or hard-edged coffee tables, TV stands, and hearths, and edge cushioning to any low sharp edge at head height for a toddler. Clean and dry the surface, then press the adhesive pad on firmly for the full time stated on the pack. These are all stick-on - no drilling needed.

CP-05Work out what type of wall you're fixing intoBefore you drill anywhere for a gate or a furniture anchor, find out what's behind the surface. Tap the wall: a dull, solid sound all over means solid brick or block; a hollow sound with occasional solid thuds every 400-600mm means a stud wall - a stud detector or a fridge magnet dragged across the surface will find the screw heads holding the plasterboard and mark the stud centres. Drill a small 2-3mm test hole in an inconspicuous spot: pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud, and if the drill breaks through plasterboard then hits solid resistance a short distance behind (10-30mm), that's dot-and-dab plasterboard bonded to masonry. Older houses (pre-1930s) often have lath and plaster instead of plasterboard - it feels slightly springy and you'll find thin wooden laths behind a layer of solid plaster, nailed to joists or studs roughly every 400mm.

CP-06Fit a screw-fixed stair gatePressure-fit gates need no drilling and are fine at the top of stairs only if fitted correctly and checked regularly - but a screw-fixed gate is more secure for daily use, especially at the top of stairs. Before drilling, use your detector and still assume there could be a cable or pipe there anyway - some are too deep, in conduit, or behind metal-backed board to show up. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns; if in any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill. Into solid brick or block: drill a 6mm hole 40-50mm deep, fit a 6mm wall plug, and use the screws supplied with the gate. Into a timber stud: find the stud centre with your detector, drill a 2mm pilot hole, and drive the screw straight into the timber - no plug needed. Into a metal stud: never use a wall plug or wood screw, they strip straight through 0.5mm steel - use the self-drilling metal-stud fixing or toggle anchor supplied with (or bought to match) the gate kit. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to pass through the board and adhesive dabs (often 60-75mm total) and bite into the masonry behind. On lath and plaster, locate a solid joist or stud behind the lath and screw into that timber, at least 40mm deep - screwing into lath alone will crack the plaster and won't hold the gate.

CP-07Anchor tall or heavy furniture to the wallBookcases, chests of drawers, and wardrobes are the biggest tip-over risk for climbing toddlers - anchor anything a child could climb or pull on. Use your detector before drilling, and still treat every wall as if a cable or pipe could be hiding there; check your stopcock works and isolate the circuit at the consumer unit if you're at all unsure. Drill only as deep as you need and stop immediately if you hit anything unexpected. Into solid brick or block: drill 6mm holes 45mm deep, fit wall plugs, and screw the anti-tip bracket to the wall. Into a timber stud: fix into the centre of the stud with a 4mm pilot hole and a 40-50mm wood screw, never into the plasterboard alone. Into a metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud anchor or hollow-wall toggle rated for the strap's pull force - a plain screw or plug will fail. A metal stud alone will not reliably hold a heavy or climbable piece of furniture against a child pulling on it; if there's no timber stud or masonry behind, get a timber noggin fitted between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind if it's reachable. On dot-and-dab, use a bradawl through a nearby socket cut-out to check the board and dab-gap depth, then use a fixing long enough to reach the solid masonry behind (often 75-100mm). On lath and plaster, locate a joist or stud behind the lath and screw at least 40mm into the timber - if the fixing point misses every joist, fit a short timber batten across two joists first and anchor to that instead.

CP-08Fit window restrictors on upper-floor windowsFit a restrictor to any window a child could open and fall from, especially on upper floors. These usually screw into the window frame, not the wall, so cable and pipe risk is low, but still check with your detector if the frame sits close to a wall opening. Drill a small pilot hole matched to the screw size given with the restrictor kit, and fit so the window opens only a small gap (100mm or less) before the restrictor stops it. Building Regulations (Approved Document K) only set fall-safety rules for new or replacement windows, not for adding a restrictor to an existing one - but always fit a type with a quick-release catch, and make sure an adult can reach and release it in seconds, so the window still works as a fire escape.

CP-09Test everything and tidy upPull firmly on every gate, anchored piece of furniture, and cupboard lock to check they hold, and open every window restrictor to check the quick-release still works easily. Vacuum up any drilling dust or swarf and dispose of offcuts, screws, and packaging straight away - small parts and plastic wrapping are choking and strangulation hazards for young children. Walk the rooms again at toddler height to check nothing was missed.
