Dot-and-dab plasterboard explained

Learn to recognise dot-and-dab plasterboard so you know what's really behind your wall before you fix anything to it.

DD-01Understand what dot-and-dab isDot-and-dab is a way of fitting plasterboard straight onto a brick or blockwork wall, without using timber battens. Blobs of adhesive, called dabs, are stuck to the wall in vertical stripes, and the plasterboard is pressed onto them. This leaves gaps of empty space, called the void, between the board and the actual wall, usually 10mm to 40mm deep.
DD-02Know why it changes your planA dot-and-dab wall sounds and behaves differently from solid masonry. Standard wall plugs can spin uselessly in the void instead of gripping brick, and cables or pipes sometimes run loose in that gap rather than chased into the wall behind it. Knowing which type of wall you've got changes which fixings you should buy and how deep you need to drill.
DD-03Do the knock testMake a fist and knock gently across the wall at chest height, moving sideways in a straight line every 50mm or so. Listen for the sound changing: a hollow, drum-like sound means dot-and-dab or a gap behind the board, while a dull, solid thud means solid masonry right behind the plaster. The mistake beginners make is assuming any hollow sound means a timber stud wall - solid brick with a plasterboard skin stuck to it sounds hollow too.
DD-04Test more than one spotKnock at several points across the wall, not just one. Some walls mix construction - solid below a window sill, dot-and-dab above it, or a section battened differently near a chimney breast. Testing only once and assuming the whole wall matches is the mistake that catches people out later.
DD-05Find the dabs with a detectorA detector is a handheld tool you slide slowly across the wall; it beeps or lights up when it senses a change, such as denser material, metal, or an edge. Run it over the hollow-sounding area and you should pick up the vertical dab lines roughly every 300mm to 600mm apart, with gaps in between. This tells you where you'll get a solid fixing and where you won't.
DD-06Drill a small test hole safely if you need to confirmIf you're planning to hang something heavy, drilling a small pilot hole tells you the depth of the void and confirms the dab pattern before you commit. If there's any doubt at all about what's inside that wall, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before you drill, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water. A detector reduces risk but does not remove it - it can miss cables that run deep, sit in metal conduit, hide behind metal-backed plasterboard, or simply weren't installed in the expected safe zones, which is common with older or amateur wiring. Treat the wall as if something is there until you've proved otherwise, not the other way round.
DD-07Confirm you've got it rightYou've correctly identified dot-and-dab when the knock test gives a repeating pattern of hollow and solid every 300mm to 600mm, matching what the detector or test hole showed. If a pilot hole passes through plasterboard, hits open space, then meets solid masonry, that's the void doing exactly what it should. If the wall is solid all the way through everywhere you test, it isn't dot-and-dab - it's plastered solid masonry or timber battens instead.
