CG-05Check for pipes and cables before you nailOn a suspended timber floor, pipes and cables can run under the boards close to the edges, especially near a kitchen or bathroom wall. Run a cable and pipe detector along the line of the gripper rod, but don't trust it completely — detectors miss cables that are deep, in conduit, or just outside the areas they expect. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the electrics at the consumer unit and turn the water off at the stopcock before nailing near a suspect area.
