Fit plug-in under-cabinet LED lights

Stick LED strips under your kitchen cabinets, run the cable tidily to a socket, and plug in — no electrician needed.

UCL-01Check the kit and plan the layoutUnpack the LED strip kit and check you have enough strip to cover each cabinet run, the linking cables, and the plug-in transformer. Hold a strip under a cabinet to check it fits within the recessed lip so it stays out of sight. Measure the total cable run from the last strip to the nearest switched socket, allowing slack for cornering.

UCL-02Clean and dry the fixing surfaceWipe the underside of each cabinet with a damp cloth to remove grease and dust, then dry it fully. Any grease left behind will stop stick-on pads gripping. Let the surface air-dry for a few minutes before fitting anything.

UCL-03Fit the LED strips to the cabinetsPeel back a short length of the adhesive backing and press the strip firmly into place along the front lip of the cabinet, working along the whole strip so it beds down evenly. If your kit includes small brackets or clips instead, screw these into the cabinet base first using the short screws provided — cabinet undersides are thin plywood or chipboard, so a pilot hole of about 2mm stops it splitting. Repeat for each cabinet, keeping strips lined up if cabinets sit in a row.

UCL-04Link the strips and route the cableConnect each strip to the next using the linking leads supplied, following the arrows on the strip so power flows the right way. Run the final cable along the underside of the cabinet and down towards the socket, keeping it clear of the hob, sink and any hot surfaces. Decide now whether the cable can simply drop down inside a cupboard or needs to run along open wall to reach the socket.
UCL-05Before drilling any cable clips into the wall, check what's behind itIf the cable run needs clipping to open wall, cables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind it — not just in the usual safe zones. Use a cable and pipe detector to scan the area, but still treat it as if something might be there even when the detector shows nothing: detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or outside the expected zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Before you drill, find your stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off at once if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.

UCL-06Work out your wall typeTap the wall where you plan to fix a cable clip. A dull, solid sound usually means brick or block; a hollow sound means plasterboard on a stud frame or dot-and-dab. On a stud wall, run a magnet or stud detector sideways to find a line of screw heads about 400mm or 600mm apart — that line marks the studs. Drill a small pilot hole in the centre of a suspected stud: timber dust means a wood stud, fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud, and studs built since the 1990s in flats and new builds are very often metal.

UCL-07Fix cable clips using the right fixing for your wallFor a light cable clip, drive a small self-adhesive clip straight onto clean, dry paint or tile with no drilling at all where the surface allows it. On solid brick or block, drill a 6mm hole 30-35mm deep, insert a wall plug, and fix the clip with a short screw. Into a timber stud, drive the clip screw straight into the centre of the stud with no plug needed. Into a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud screw made for the job — a plain wood screw will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Onto plasterboard between studs or on dot-and-dab, use a small plasterboard fixing rated for the clip's light weight, and on dot-and-dab make sure the fixing is long enough to bite into the plasterboard without hitting the masonry behind unless you want it to.

UCL-08Connect the transformer and plug inPlug the transformer into the last linking lead, then plug it into a nearby switched socket. Tuck any excess cable into a cable tidy or loosely coil it out of sight inside a cupboard, keeping it away from the sink and hob. Switch on and check every strip lights up evenly along its whole length.

UCL-09Test and tidy upOpen and close cupboard doors near the strips to check nothing catches on the cable. Wipe away any dust from drilling and collect offcuts of backing tape and packaging for recycling. Leave the lights on for ten minutes and check the transformer stays only warm, not hot, to the touch.
