Fit trellis panels to an exterior brick wall using timber battens, masonry fixings and a spirit level, in one session.

AB-01Plan the layout and check the wallMeasure the wall and mark out where each trellis panel will sit, leaving a small gap at the bottom for drainage and airflow. Check the brick or block is sound — no crumbling mortar or loose bricks. If the wall is shared with next door (a boundary wall), you may need to tell your neighbour before you fix anything to it.

KNOW THE RULES

If the wall is a shared boundary (party) wall, the Party Wall Act 1996 may apply to work that affects it. Most trellis fixing to your own side is fine, but check if you're unsure — especially on older shared garden walls.

AB-02Gather your tools and materialsYou'll need a spirit level, a drill with a masonry bit, timber battens to fix the trellis to (rather than screwing straight through the panel into the wall), and masonry fixings rated for the weight of the trellis plus any plants it will carry. Treated timber battens last far longer outdoors than untreated ones.

AB-03Mark the batten positionsHold a batten against the wall at each panel edge and mark where it needs fixing, roughly every 400-500mm up its length. Use a spirit level to make sure each batten line is truly vertical before marking the drill points — a batten fixed even slightly off will throw the whole panel out of true.

AB-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run in places you don't expect, even on an outside wall — think alarm bell wiring, outdoor light circuits, or a gas or water pipe running to a meter or outside tap. Run a cable and pipe detector over every mark before you drill, but don't rely on it completely — detectors can miss cables in conduit or buried deep. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit and turn off the water at the stopcock before you drill.

AB-05Drill and plug the wallUse a 6mm masonry bit for standard masonry frame fixings, drilling to a depth of about 45-50mm — enough to pass through the batten and get a firm grip in solid brick or block. Drill straight, not at an angle, and clear dust from the hole before fitting the fixing. If you hit a soft or crumbling spot, move the hole slightly rather than forcing it.

AB-06Fix the battens to the wallHold the batten in place, check it's still plumb with the spirit level, then drive the masonry frame fixing screws through the batten and into the drilled holes. Tighten fully so the batten sits flat and doesn't rock. Repeat for every fixing point marked earlier.

AB-07Fix the trellis panel to the battensOffer the trellis panel up to the fixed battens and check it sits square. Screw through the panel frame into the battens using galvanised screws, spaced every 200-300mm along each edge. Galvanised or stainless screws resist rust outdoors far better than plain steel.

AB-08Check level and tighten everythingRun the spirit level across the top and side of the finished panel and adjust if needed before the fixings are fully tightened. Give every screw a final check for tightness. A loose trellis will work its fixings loose over time, especially once climbing plants add weight.

AB-09Tidy upSweep up any masonry dust and off-cuts of timber. Check the ground around the base of the wall is clear so plants can be trained up the trellis straight away. Store any leftover screws and battens for future repairs.
