Hang a heavy mirror on a timber stud wall

Hang a heavy mirror securely on any wall type, using the right fixing and checking for cables and pipes first.

HM-01Plan the position and check the mirror's fixingsDecide where the mirror will hang and mark the top edge with masking tape and a pencil line, using a spirit level to keep it straight. Check how the mirror hangs — a wire, a cleat, or two D-ring fixings — and weigh it if you can. Anything over about 15kg needs a proper stud or masonry fixing, not just a picture hook.

HM-02Work out what your wall is made ofKnock the wall — a dull thud means solid brick or block, a hollow sound means a stud wall or dot-and-dab plasterboard. Run a magnet or stud detector across the marked area to find fixing points, and check whether screw heads sit in a straight vertical line, which suggests studs behind plasterboard. Drill a small 2mm test hole — timber dust means a wooden stud, fine grey swarf means a metal one, and dust with a gap behind means dot-and-dab.

HM-03Check for cables, pipes, and know how to isolate themCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the marked 'safe zones', so use a detector but still assume something could be there. Detectors can miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and metal stud frames confuse cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.

HM-04Solid brick or block: drill and plugDrill with a masonry bit sized to your plug — typically 6mm for a mirror this weight — to a depth of about 40mm, 5mm deeper than the plug so dust has somewhere to go. Push in a wall plug rated for at least 20kg, then drive in a 40-50mm screw, leaving about 5-8mm proud to catch the mirror's wire or D-ring.

HM-05Timber stud wall: screw straight into the studOnce you've confirmed a timber stud with your test hole, drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud to stop the wood splitting. Drive in a 40mm wood screw directly into the pilot hole — no plug needed, as the screw bites straight into solid timber. If your fixing points don't land on a stud, you'll need a heavy-duty plasterboard toggle instead (see the plasterboard step).

HM-06Metal stud wall: use a metal-stud fixing, never a plug or wood screwA plain plastic wall plug and an ordinary wood screw will both strip straight through 0.5mm steel — use a self-drilling metal-stud anchor or a toggle-type hollow-wall fixing rated for the wall's thickness instead. A metal stud will not hold anything heavy on its own, and a heavy mirror sitting flush against the wall is usually fine, but check the fixing's weight rating first. If your mirror is very heavy or hangs proud of the wall, ask about fitting a timber noggin between the studs before you fix anything.

HM-07Plasterboard between studs: use a rated toggle or hollow-wall anchorIf your fixing points fall between studs rather than on one, use a toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the mirror's weight — plastic plugs alone won't hold in plasterboard. Drill a hole to the size stated on the anchor's packet, usually 8-10mm, push the folded toggle through, then tighten the screw until it sits snug against the board.

HM-08Dot-and-dab plasterboard: fix through to the masonry behindDot-and-dab plasterboard sits on adhesive dabs with an air gap of 10-40mm behind it, so a normal fixing has nothing solid to grip. Use a long fixing — typically 75mm — that passes through the plasterboard, spans the gap, and anchors into the masonry wall behind, such as a frame fixing or long specialist dot-and-dab anchor. Drill slowly and expect to feel the drill pass through board, then air, then hit brick or block — that's normal.

HM-09Lath and plaster: fix into the timber behind, not the lathLath and plaster walls have thin wooden strips under the plaster, and screwing into a lath alone can crack the surface and won't hold real weight. Find the timber joist or stud behind the laths with your detector, drill a pilot hole through the plaster and lath into it, and use a 50mm screw so it bites well into solid timber. If the plaster around the hole feels loose or crumbly, stop and let it settle, or fix a small plywood pattress over the area first to spread the load.

HM-10Hang the mirror and check it's levelLift the mirror onto the fixings, hooking the wire or D-rings securely over the screw heads or anchor points. Check it's level with a spirit level, and nudge it gently rather than lifting it off and on repeatedly, which can wear the fixing. Give it a firm push from the top corner to confirm it's stable before letting go.
HM-11Tidy upVacuum up drilling dust from the floor and skirting, and wipe any dust off the wall with a damp cloth. Check the mirror sits flush and doesn't rock, and dispose of any offcuts or packaging.
