Load-bearing or not: first checks before you touch it

Learn simple checks to work out if a wall is load-bearing before you drill, cut or plan any change.

LB-01Understand what load-bearing actually meansA load-bearing wall carries weight from the floor, roof or walls above, down through itself to the foundations. Cut into it or remove it without proper support and you risk sagging floors, cracked plaster, or worse. A non-load-bearing wall (often called a stud wall or partition wall) only divides up a room and carries its own weight, nothing else.
LB-02Check whether the wall lines up through the houseGo to the room directly above and directly below the wall you're checking, or up into the loft. See if a wall sits in roughly the same place on every level. A wall that stacks up through two or more floors is much more likely to be load-bearing, because it's carrying weight all the way down. A wall that appears on one floor only, with open space beneath it, is more likely a partition. Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, so don't skip checking those just because they seem obvious.
LB-03Look at which way the joists runJoists are the horizontal timber (or engineered) beams that hold up a floor or ceiling, usually spaced evenly and hidden under floorboards or visible in a loft. Load-bearing walls usually run at right angles to the joists, because the joists rest their ends on them for support. A wall running parallel to the joists, with nothing resting on it, is more likely non-structural. Use a torch in the loft and look along the underside of the roof timbers rather than guessing from the ceiling below; that's the mistake most beginners make.
LB-04Tap the wall to feel for solid or hollowKnuckle-tap the wall at several points, roughly a metre apart, listening as you go. A solid, dull thud usually means brick, block or masonry. A hollow, drum-like sound usually means a timber or metal stud partition behind plasterboard (a flat, factory-made board used for internal walls and ceilings). Tap more than once: hitting a hidden timber stud or noggin behind plasterboard can sound solid and fool you into thinking it's masonry.
LB-05Drill a small test hole to check what's behind the surfaceRun a cable and pipe detector over the spot first, but treat this as a starting point, not proof of safety: detectors can miss cables that run deep, sit in metal conduit, hide behind metal-backed plasterboard, or simply lie outside the expected safe zones, and older or amateur wiring often ignores those zones completely. Expect something to be there and prove otherwise. If there's any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water. Drill slowly with a small masonry bit, a few millimetres at a time: solid brick or block feels gritty and resists all the way through, while a stud partition feels like empty space once you're past 12-15mm of plasterboard. Fill the tiny hole with a dab of filler afterwards.

LB-06Look for signs of a hidden beam or lintelA lintel is a horizontal beam built in above a door or window opening to carry the weight above it across the gap. If you spot a straight horizontal line in the ceiling plaster, a boxed-in section running across a room, or an exposed steel beam, that's a strong sign the wall was structural and has already been altered by a previous owner. This is one of the clearest confirmations you can find without opening anything up.
LB-07Cross-check everything, then get proper confirmationNo single check above is certain on its own. If the wall lines up through floors, has joists resting on it, sounds solid, and has a lintel over any opening, treat it as load-bearing until proven otherwise. Never remove or alter a suspected load-bearing wall based on your own checks alone.

In England and Wales, altering or removing a load-bearing wall needs Building Regulations approval (Part A, structure), usually with a structural engineer's design for a new beam. If the wall is shared with a neighbouring property, the Party Wall Act 1996 may also apply. Get building control or a structural engineer involved before any structural work.
