Nails explained: which nail for which job

Learn the five common nail types and how to pick the right one for a job with confidence.

NA-01Understand how a nail actually holdsA nail has no thread. It grips because the wood fibres squeeze in against its sides as you drive it in. This means a nail holds less strongly than a screw and can work loose or pull out under strain. Use nails for quick, light jobs like trim, boxing-in and rough carpentry, not for anything load-bearing or under constant strain.
NA-02Spot a round wire nailThis is the everyday nail: round shank, flat wide head, plain or galvanised silver finish. It is the strongest common nail and is meant for rough work like stud framing, fencing and joists where the head will not be seen. In your hand it feels thick and heavy for its length. The beginner mistake is using it on visible finishing work, where the flat head sits proud and looks ugly.

NA-03Spot a lost head nailThis nail has a small, slightly conical head instead of a wide flat one. It is designed to be tapped just below the wood surface using a nail punch (a slim metal tool you hit with the hammer), then hidden with filler. Use it for skirting boards, architrave and other finishing carpentry where you want an invisible fixing. The common mistake is stopping before the head goes below the surface, so filler never quite covers it and you see a dark dot forever.

NA-04Spot a panel pinA panel pin is very thin with a tiny head, used for delicate trim, decorative beading and thin cabinet backing where a bigger nail would split the wood. It feels almost like stiff wire between your fingers. Tap it gently, not hard, because a hard first hit bends it sideways instead of driving it in. This is the nail beginners bend most often by treating it like a normal nail.

NA-05Spot a masonry nail and respect what's behind the wallA masonry nail is hardened steel with grooves (fluted) down the shank, made to be hammered straight into brick or blockwork to fix a timber batten, without drilling a hole first. Before you hammer into any wall, stop and think about what is hidden inside it. If there is any doubt, isolate the electrics at the consumer unit (the fuse box) before working near that spot, and turn off the water at the stopcock before disturbing anywhere pipework could run. A cable detector helps but does not prove a wall is safe: it can miss cables that run deep, sit behind metal-backed plasterboard, or were installed off the normal safe zones, which older or amateur wiring often ignores. Treat every wall as if something is there until you've checked properly, not the other way round.

NA-06Match nail length to the timberA simple rule: the nail should be roughly two to two-and-a-half times longer than the thickness of the piece you are nailing through. This lets it bite firmly into the timber or batten underneath, not just sit in the top piece. Too short and the fixing is weak; too long and it can burst out the back or split thin timber.
NA-07Check you chose the right nailOnce driven in, give the fixed piece a firm tug or push by hand. It should not move or flex. Look closely at the wood around the nail for any hairline crack, which means the nail was too thick or driven too close to the edge. For finishing nails, the head should sit flush or just below the surface, ready for filler; for rough carpentry, a flat head fully seated flush is correct.
