Oscillating multi-tool: common mistakes and how to avoid them

OM-01Understand the tool and pick the right bladeAn oscillating multi-tool has a blade that vibrates rapidly side to side (oscillates) rather than spinning, which lets it cut, scrape or sand in tight corners. Blades come in types: wood blades have widely spaced teeth for fast, rough cuts; bi-metal or metal blades have fine teeth for nails, screws and metal; universal blades handle both but wear faster. The common beginner mistake is grabbing whatever blade is fitted and forcing it through the wrong material, which blunts the blade quickly and gives a ragged cut.

OM-02Fit the blade securelyOpen the tool's quick-release lever, slot the blade onto the mounting pin, then release the lever so it clamps shut. Give the blade a firm wiggle by hand before switching on; it should feel completely solid with no play. The mistake beginners make is not pushing the blade fully home before releasing the lever, so it works loose mid-cut and can fly off.
OM-03Hold it lightly and let it do the workGrip the tool with one or both hands and guide it gently; you're steering, not pushing. The blade should feel like it's doing the cutting on its own, with only light pressure from you. Beginners often press down hard thinking this speeds things up, but it just overheats the blade, scorches wood, and wears the tool out faster.
OM-04Start slow, then build up speedSwitch the tool on at a low speed setting first, and let the blade tip touch the material gently before increasing speed. Starting at full speed makes the blade skate or jump across the surface before it bites, leaving scratches or a wandering cut line. Once you feel the blade settled into a groove, you can safely increase speed for the rest of the cut.
OM-05Stop before you plunge-cut into a wall or floorIf you're about to cut into a wall, floor, or ceiling anywhere a cable or pipe could run, treat it as if something is there until you prove otherwise. If there is any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling or cutting, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water. A cable/pipe detector helps but does not guarantee safety: it can miss cables buried deep, run in metal conduit, hidden behind metal-backed plasterboard, or routed outside the normal safe zones, and old or amateur wiring often ignores those safe zones anyway.
OM-06Control the depth and keep the blade flatKeep the blade flat against the cutting line and move it steadily forward without twisting it sideways, which can snap the blade or make it wander off line. For plunge cuts, mark your depth first and check it regularly rather than guessing, since the blade can go deeper than you intend. Move at a pace that matches the material; too fast tears the surface, too slow builds up heat.
OM-07Check the cut is clean and correctA good cut has a straight, square edge with no burn marks or melted plastic, and the blade should feel only warm, not hot, when you switch off. If the edge is ragged or torn, the blade was likely dull or the wrong type for the material. If you smell burning or see scorch marks, you were pressing too hard or moving too slowly; ease off next time and let the tool set the pace.
