Swap a worn uPVC door handle for a new one by matching the spindle length and swapping both handle halves together.
AB-01Check the door and buy the right handleOpen and close the door a few times and note exactly how the old handle behaves — stiff, loose, or not springing back. uPVC handles come in standard backplate spacings (usually 92mm centre-to-centre) but spindle lengths vary, so measure the door thickness before you buy. Take the old handle off later in this job to match it exactly, or take a photo of it now if the shop needs to see it.
AB-02Remove the old handleClose the door but do not let it lock. Find the two small screws on the inside handle plate — they are usually hidden under the handle itself, so lift or push the lever slightly to see them. Undo both screws fully, then pull the inside and outside handles apart from the door together, keeping the metal spindle safe as it comes free.
AB-03Check the spindle lengthThe spindle is the square metal bar that passes through the door and turns the lock mechanism. Measure it, or measure the door thickness and subtract about 5mm for the mechanism recess on each side. Compare this to the spindle length needed for your new handle — most kits list a range (e.g. 25–92mm) and some include a spare spindle you can cut to size with a hacksaw.

AB-04Fit the new handleSlide the spindle through the lock mechanism so it sits centred and turns freely. Hold the outside handle in place, then offer up the inside handle plate over the spindle on the other side. Insert the two long fixing screws through the inside plate into the threaded posts on the outside handle and tighten evenly, a little at a time on each side.

AB-05Test the handle and lockWith the door still open, lift the handle to engage the multipoint lock, then lower it to release. Turn the key if the door has a lock cylinder, and check it locks and unlocks smoothly. Close the door and repeat the test — if the handle feels stiff or loose, loosen the screws slightly, realign the handle, and retighten.
AB-06Tidy upWipe down the door around the handle to remove any dust or fingerprints. Put the old handle and spindle aside for recycling, and keep any spare screws in a labelled bag in case you need them later.
