Secure a shed against break-ins

Strengthen your shed's locks, hinges, windows and floor anchor to stop break-ins in one session.

SH-01Check the shed for weak pointsWalk round the shed and look at the door, hinges, lock, windows and floor. Note anything flimsy: hinges fitted on the outside, a thin single-skin door, a small padlock, or glass windows at ground level. Write a short list so you tackle the biggest risks first.
SH-02Fit a heavy-duty hasp and stapleTake off any weak existing lock. Position the hasp so its fixing screws are hidden once the padlock is closed. Drill 3mm pilot holes into the door and frame timber first, then drive coach screws at least 50mm long so they bite into the solid frame, not just the door skin.

SH-03Add a closed-shackle padlockFit a 5-lever closed-shackle padlock — the closed shackle leaves no gap for bolt croppers to grip. Match the shackle size to the hasp so it sits snugly. Test the key a few times before you rely on it.

SH-04Fit hinge bolts if hinges are exposedIf the hinges are on the outside of the door, fit hinge bolts (dog bolts) on that side. These stop the door being lifted off even if someone unscrews the hinges. Drill 10mm holes at hinge height, pre-drilling a small pilot hole in the frame first. Two bolts per door is usually enough.

SH-05Reinforce a flimsy doorIf the door panel flexes when pushed or you can see daylight round the edges, screw a full sheet of 12mm exterior-grade plywood over the inside face. Pre-drill and use 40mm screws every 150mm round the edge, plus a few across the middle. This spreads the load so a kick can't punch straight through.

SH-06Secure or block the windowsApply security film to the inside of shed windows, or screw timber battens across the frame from inside using 40mm screws. Film supports the glass so it can't be popped out quietly; battens stop anyone reaching through. This is a quick step but it closes an easy way in.

SH-07Fit a ground anchor into the concrete floorBefore drilling the floor, think about what's underneath. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut off the water fast if you ever hit a pipe anywhere in the house or garden. Water pipes are unlikely under a shed slab, but if the shed has power or an outside tap nearby, a cable or pipe could run close by — use a cable/pipe detector as a check, but still treat the spot as if something could be there, and if in doubt isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling. Mark the anchor position away from any known cable or pipe run, drill with the masonry bit size stated on the anchor packaging (typically 12-16mm) to the depth given (commonly 80-100mm), clear out the dust, and fit the anchor with resin or expanding bolts. Let it cure fully before loading it with a chain.

SH-08Fit a battery or solar PIR lightFit a battery or solar-powered PIR light above the door, angled to cover the approach to the shed. No wiring is needed, so there's no electrical work involved. Check or change the battery every few months so it doesn't fail when you need it.

SH-09Test everything and tidy upLock and unlock the padlock a few times to check it moves smoothly. Push and pull the door to make sure it doesn't flex at the hinge or lock side. Sweep up drilled dust and offcuts, and store spare screws and the spare key somewhere safe indoors.
