Stop bath sealant cracking every few months

Remove old sealant, secure a wobbly bath, then reseal properly so the joint stops cracking again.

BS-01Work out why it keeps crackingCracking sealant is almost always caused by movement, not bad workmanship. Push down on the bath rim and rock it gently — if it flexes, or the gap to the wall opens and closes, that's your cause. Also check the old bead for mould, gaps, or an uneven width, which fails on its own even if the bath is solid. Note whether the bath moves, since that decides if you need the fixing step later.
BS-02Clear the area and ventilateRemove bath mats, bottles and the bath panel if one is fitted, so you can see and reach the whole joint. Open a window or the door, since sealant remover and fresh silicone give off strong fumes in a small bathroom. Lay an old towel or dust sheet down to catch bits of scraped-off sealant.

BS-03Cut out the old sealantRun a sharp blade along both edges of the old bead to free it from the bath and tiles, then peel it away by hand. A dedicated sealant remover tool or a flat scraper gets into the corners without scratching the enamel. Go slowly — any leftover silicone stops the new bead from sticking.

BS-04Clean and degrease the gapScrub the joint with a sealant remover gel to dissolve any silicone residue, then wipe over with methylated spirits on a lint-free cloth. Let it dry fully — any damp or grease stops the new sealant bonding. If any grout nearby has gone soft, black or crumbly, rake it out too, since sealant won't stick over mould.

BS-05Secure a bath that moves (skip if it doesn't rock)If the bath rocked in Step 1, sealant will keep splitting until it's held still. Baths are normally screwed to the wall through a lip or bracket, so find where that fixing has failed. Before drilling, remember cables and pipes can run almost anywhere near a bathroom — a detector helps but can miss deep cables, metal conduit, or pipework, so drill carefully and be ready to stop. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns before you start, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit if there's any doubt, and turn the water off before cutting into anything that could carry water. Work out the wall type first: tap the wall — a dull thud between studs and a sharper knock on the stud itself — and run a stud detector or magnet along a line of screw heads to find timber studs at roughly 400mm or 600mm centres. A small pilot hole bringing out pale dust means timber; bright metal swarf means a metal stud. On solid brick or block, drill 6mm and use a wall plug with a 5x50mm screw, about 50mm deep. Into a timber stud, drive a wood screw straight into its centre. Into a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a hollow-wall toggle rated for metal — never a plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw, as both strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Into plasterboard between studs, use a toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the bracket's pull, not a lightweight picture-hook fixing. Through dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough (typically 75-90mm) to bite into the masonry behind, not just the dab. Into lath and plaster, find the timber lath by feeling for solid resistance and screw into that, not just the plaster skim. If the fixing point lands between studs with nothing solid behind it, fit a timber noggin (50x25mm) between the studs first and screw into that instead.

BS-06Fill the bath before sealingFill the bath to a normal bathing level and leave the water in while you seal. The weight pulls the bath down to the position it sits in during everyday use, so the sealant cures at the right width instead of splitting the first time someone has a bath.
BS-07Mask off straight linesRun masking tape along the tile edge and along the bath edge, leaving a neat 5mm gap between the two strips for the sealant. This gives you crisp, straight lines and keeps smears off the tiles and enamel.

BS-08Apply the new sealantLoad a sanitary silicone sealant into the gun and run a steady, continuous bead along the masked gap. Choose a mould-resistant bathroom sealant rather than a general-purpose one, since it's made to flex with the bath and shrug off damp.

BS-09Tool the bead and pull the tapeSmooth the bead with a wetted finger or a sealant-tooling tool for a neat concave finish. Peel away the masking tape straight away while the sealant is still wet — if you wait until it skins over, the tape tears the edge.
BS-10Leave it to cure before using the bathKeep the water in the bath for at least an hour so the sealant cures at the loaded width, then drain it gently without splashing the fresh bead. Avoid using the bath, or running a shower nearby, for the full cure time stated on the tube, usually 24 hours. Rushing this step is the single biggest reason sealant cracks again within weeks.
BS-11Tidy upWipe down the tiles and bath enamel to remove any smears, and bin the old sealant strips and blade safely. Clean the mastic gun nozzle and any tools before the silicone sets hard on them.
