Stud detector: how to hold it safely

Learn to hold and read a stud detector correctly before you ever drill into a wall.

SD-01Know what the tool actually doesA stud detector (also sold as a wall scanner) is a handheld device that senses changes behind plasterboard or plaster: timber studs, metal fixings, sometimes live electric cables, and dense material edges. It does NOT reliably find plastic pipes, and it can miss things depending on wall type. Treat it as a helpful guide, not proof of what's behind the wall.
SD-02Calibrate it on a section you know is clearMost detectors need calibrating before use. Hold the flat back of the device firmly against the wall, keeping it flat and level, then press and hold the button as instructed until it beeps or shows a steady light. Do this on a patch of wall you're fairly sure has nothing behind it, like open space away from switches and corners.
SD-03Move it slowly in one directionStarting from your calibrated spot, slide the detector sideways in a straight horizontal line at a slow, steady pace, no faster than a couple of centimetres per second. Keep the device flat against the wall the whole time; tilting it or lifting it off gives false readings. The beginner mistake is rushing this and swiping like a phone screen, which the detector can't process properly.
SD-04Read the signal properlyAs you pass over a stud or hidden object, the beeping will speed up or a light/display will change, then ease off again once you're clear of it. Stop the moment the signal changes and note that point. Don't just listen for one beep and assume that's the exact centre; the edges of the reading matter as much as the peak.
SD-05Mark both edges, not just oneGo back over the same line from the other direction. Where the signal starts is one edge of the object, where it stops is the other edge. Make a small pencil mark at each edge, then the middle point between them is roughly the centre of the stud or object.
SD-06Scan the same spot from a second angleRepeat the scan vertically, not just horizontally, over the same area. This catches things a single horizontal sweep can miss, such as a cable running up rather than across. If the two scans don't agree, trust neither of them completely and widen your search area before deciding anything.
SD-07Before you drill: expect a cable or pipe, don't assume it's clearA detector reduces risk, it doesn't remove it. It can miss cables that are buried deep, run inside metal conduit, sit behind metal-backed plasterboard, or simply aren't where 'safe zones' say they should be, especially in older or amateur wiring. If there's any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling anywhere near it, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry a pipe. Work on the basis that something is there until you've proven otherwise, not the other way round.
SD-08Check you've done it rightYou've used the detector correctly if you calibrated it fresh on this wall, scanned slowly in two directions, and got a consistent, repeatable reading in the same place both times with clear edges marked. If your readings jump around, keep changing, or you only checked one direction, don't drill yet; recalibrate and scan again.
