Tile a small wall with large-format tiles

Prepare the wall, support the tiles as you go, then lay and grout large-format tiles for a neat, level finish.

TW-01Work out what's behind the wallTap the wall all over. A dull, solid sound everywhere is brick or block. A hollow sound with a solid edge every 400-600mm is plasterboard on dot-and-dab. A hollow sound with a regular line of screw heads (find them with a magnet or stud detector) is a stud wall - drill a small pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot and check the dust: pale wood dust means timber studs, fine grey metal swarf means metal studs. Lath and plaster feels slightly springy and sounds hollow but uneven, with thin wooden strips under the plaster - it's old and weak, so treat it with care.

TW-02Strip and clean the wallRemove old tiles, wallpaper or flaking paint back to a sound surface. Fill any holes or gaps with filler and let it dry fully. Wipe the wall down to remove dust and grease so the adhesive can grip properly.

TW-03Check the wall can take the weight, and fix support safelyLarge-format tiles are heavy, so weak walls need reinforcing before you start. Cables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a wall - always use a detector, but still assume something is there until you've proved otherwise, since detectors miss deep cables, metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed board. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns before you drill, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit first, and turn off the water before cutting into anything that might carry it. On a timber stud wall, screw a cement backer board into the centre of each stud with a wood screw. On a metal stud wall, use self-drilling metal-stud screws or a toggle fixing - never a wood screw or plastic plug, both strip straight through 0.5mm steel. On dot-and-dab, use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard, the dab gap and bite into the masonry behind - usually 60-75mm. On lath and plaster, avoid fixing into the lath itself; find the joists or studs behind it instead, or overboard with plasterboard first. If a metal stud wall has no timber noggin behind it, don't rely on it alone for a heavy tiled area - fix through to solid masonry or add a noggin first.

TW-04Mark a level line and fit a support battenMeasure up from the lowest point of the floor or worktop and use a spirit level to draw a horizontal line where the top of your first row of tiles will sit. Screw a straight timber batten along this line, using the fixing that matches your wall type from the previous step, so the weight of the tiles rests on the batten while the adhesive cures rather than sliding down the wall.

TW-05Dry-lay the first row to plan cutsLay tiles out on the floor along the length of the wall, with spacers between them, to see where cuts will fall at each end and around any socket or fitting. Adjust the layout so cuts are even and not too narrow. Mark the wall lightly with pencil where each tile edge will land.

TW-06Mix and apply the adhesiveMix adhesive to a firm, ridged consistency and spread it on the wall with a 10mm notched trowel, combing it in one direction. Back-butter each large tile as well - spread a thin layer on the tile itself - to stop hollow spots and lippage, which large tiles show up badly.

TW-07Lay the first row on the battenPress each tile into the adhesive with a slight twisting motion, then tap gently with a rubber mallet to bed it in evenly. Check level and flatness constantly with a spirit level and by running your hand across the joints. Fit large-tile levelling clips between tiles to stop edges sitting higher than their neighbours.

TW-08Lay the remaining rows and cut tiles to fitWork upwards row by row, checking level and spacing as you go. Measure and mark cuts carefully, then cut with a manual large-format tile cutter or a wet saw - a standard score-and-snap cutter often can't manage big tiles cleanly. If a cut lands right next to a socket, isolate that circuit at the consumer unit before you cut close to it, and use a detector to check there's nothing hidden behind the tile line before you drill any extra fixing holes.

TW-09Let the adhesive cure, then remove the battenLeave the tiles undisturbed for the time stated on the adhesive packaging, usually 24 hours. Unscrew and remove the support batten, fill any small screw holes with a dab of adhesive, and check the bottom row is firmly stuck before moving on.
TW-10Grout, clean and tidy upRemove all spacers and clips, then push grout into the joints with a rubber grout float, working diagonally across the lines. Wipe off excess with a damp sponge before it fully sets, then polish the tiles with a dry cloth once the grout has hazed over. Clean your tools straight away and dispose of any leftover adhesive and grout responsibly, not down the sink.
