Which adhesive for which material

Learn to pick the right adhesive for the job by matching materials, reading labels, and testing first.

WA-01Accept there is no all-purpose glueBeginners often reach for one bottle of glue and expect it to work on everything. Adhesives are chemistry, not magic: one type grips wood fibres, another grips plastic, another only works on damp or uneven surfaces. The mistake is buying whatever is cheapest or nearest, then wondering why the joint fails in a week.
WA-02Name both materials you're joiningSay them out loud: 'wood to wood', 'tile to plasterboard', 'plastic trim to metal'. The adhesive choice depends on both surfaces, not just one. If you skip this step you'll pick a glue for the material you're thinking about and ignore the one underneath.
WA-03Match the adhesive family to the jobPVA (white wood glue) is for porous materials like wood, paper and MDF. Contact adhesive suits laminates and veneers where you press two flat surfaces together instantly. Silicone sealant flexes and resists water, so it's for bathrooms, kitchens, and joining dissimilar materials like glass to tile. Grab adhesive (sold as 'No More Nails' or similar) is thick and strong, good for heavy or uneven fixings like skirting to a wall. Epoxy is a two-part adhesive that sets rock-hard and fills small gaps, useful for repairs needing real strength.
WA-04Read the tube before you buy itTurn the pack over and look for the 'suitable for' or 'not suitable for' list. This is the manufacturer telling you exactly what it bonds and what it won't. The common mistake is trusting the product name (some 'multi-purpose' glues still exclude common materials like uPVC or polythene) rather than the small print.
WA-05Clean and dry the surface firstWipe off dust, grease or old paint with a dry cloth, or a damp one if it's dusty, then let it dry fully. Adhesive bonds to the surface it can actually touch: a layer of dust or old wax sits between the glue and the material and stops it gripping properly. This is the single most common reason a 'good' adhesive fails.
WA-06Test on an offcut or hidden spotBefore committing to the visible part of the job, apply a small amount to a scrap piece of the same materials, or a hidden edge, and leave it for the stated cure time. Check it hasn't discoloured the surface, melted plastic, or failed to grip. Skipping this test is how beginners discover a problem only after the glue has ruined something visible.
WA-07Apply it and hold or support the jointMost adhesives need pressure or stillness while they cure, not just contact. Use masking tape, a clamp, or simply prop the piece so it can't move, and leave it for the full time stated on the pack, not just until it feels dry to the touch. Moving the joint too early is the main reason a correctly chosen glue still fails.
WA-08Check the bond has actually takenOnce the full cure time has passed, gently try to flex or twist the joint. It should feel solid with no give, no visible gap, and no residue transferring to your finger if you press the glue line. If it feels rubbery, tacky, or moves at all, it hasn't cured properly, or it was the wrong adhesive for the job, so leave it longer or start again with the correct type.
