Finding the centre of a wall or panel

Learn to find and mark the true centre of any wall or panel accurately, using measuring and diagonal methods.

FC-01Get the right tools togetherYou need a tape measure (or a folding rule for shorter panels), a pencil, and something straight like a spirit level or a long batten for drawing lines later. A soft pencil marks cleanly on most surfaces and rubs out or paints over easily. Avoid pens or markers - mistakes are permanent.

FC-02Measure the full width accuratelyHook your tape measure onto one edge and pull it straight across to the other edge, keeping it flat and level, not sagging or angled. Read the measurement in millimetres for accuracy. The beginner mistake is letting the tape droop or measuring on a slant, which gives a false, longer reading.

FC-03Halve the measurementDivide your total measurement by two to get the distance from each edge to the centre. For example, a wall measuring 2400mm has its centre at 1200mm from either edge. Double-check your division - a simple maths slip here throws everything off, and it's the most common mistake at this stage.

FC-04Mark the centre point clearlyMeasure in from one edge by your halved figure and make a small, precise dot or short pencil line, not a thick cross. A thick mark hides exactly where the true centre is, which causes small errors later. Keep the tape taut and straight while you mark, so the point doesn't shift.

FC-05Try the diagonal method for panelsFor a rectangular panel (like a door or sheet of board), you can skip measuring altogether. Draw two faint pencil lines from corner to corner, forming an X. The point where the two lines cross is the exact centre, because the diagonals of a rectangle always bisect each other.

FC-06Check your mark is rightMeasure from your centre mark to each edge separately. Both distances should match, or be within a couple of millimetres of each other. If they're noticeably different, your original measurement or maths was off - remeasure the full width and redo the halving rather than guessing a correction.

FC-07Extend the mark into a full lineIf you need a centre line running the full height or width, hold your spirit level or straightedge against the mark and draw a light, straight pencil line through it. Check the level's bubble is centred as you draw, so the line stays true and doesn't drift off to one side.
