Fit a hanging pot rack to a concrete ceiling

Fit a hanging pot rack safely to any ceiling type, using the right fixings for concrete, timber joists, metal furring or lath and plaster.

PR-01Gather your tools and check the pot rackGet everything ready: SDS drill for masonry, standard drill for wood or metal, a mixed bit set, spirit level, tape measure, pencil, step ladder and a dust sheet for the floor below. Unpack the pot rack and check the spacing between its fixing holes and its maximum load rating, printed on the box or instructions.

PR-02Work out what your ceiling is made fromTap the ceiling: a dull, solid thud usually means concrete; a hollow sound that changes every 400-600mm means plasterboard on timber joists or metal furring channels underneath. Run a stud detector or magnet along the ceiling, following any line of screw heads, to find joist or channel positions. Drill a small 3mm test hole: white or grey powder means concrete or blockwork, pale wood dust means a timber joist, fine grey crumbly dust with give behind it means old lime plaster on laths, and shiny metal filings (swarf) mean a metal furring channel.

PR-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillSweep the whole marked area with your detector in both directions. Cables can run almost anywhere in a ceiling void, and detectors miss ones that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or clipped along a joist you're not drilling into — so treat the ceiling as live until you've drilled a safe test hole. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you ever hit a pipe. If there's any doubt, isolate the relevant lighting circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, since kitchen ceiling cables often run across the whole room.
PR-04Mark and level your fixing pointsHold the pot rack's rail or frame up to the ceiling, or use a paper template if one's supplied, and mark each fixing hole with a pencil. Use the spirit level to check the marks are level along the rail before you commit to drilling. Cross-check each mark against your detector reading from Step 2 so you know exactly what you're about to drill into.
PR-05Fixing into a solid concrete ceilingDrill with an SDS drill and a masonry bit sized to match your wall plug, typically 8mm for a heavy-duty plug and screw. Drill to a depth of 50-60mm so the plug embeds fully, blow or vacuum the dust out of the hole, then insert the plug and drive the screw home. This is the strongest fixing available and takes the full weight of a loaded pot rack on its own.

PR-06Fixing into a plasterboard-on-timber-joist ceilingConfirm the joist centre with your detector, then drill a 2-3mm pilot hole to check for pale timber dust before committing. Use a heavy-duty wood screw or coach screw at least 60mm long and 5-6mm diameter, driven into the centre of the joist, not just through the plasterboard skin. Joists are usually spaced 400mm or 600mm apart; if the pot rack's holes don't line up, you'll need to fit a timber noggin between the joists from above (in the loft or from below with the plasterboard opened up) before fixing.

PR-07Fixing into a metal furring channel ceilingMetal furring channels are common in flats and new-build kitchens, and they're thin — usually 0.5-1mm steel. On their own they will not hold a pot rack that's constantly pulling downward; the fixing will tear straight through. Never use a plastic plug or ordinary wood screw here. Instead, fit a timber batten across at least two channels using self-drilling metal-frame screws, then screw the pot rack rail into the batten, or, better, drill through the channel and fix into the concrete slab or structure above using a longer masonry fixing.

PR-08Fixing into a lath-and-plaster ceilingOld lime plaster on timber laths is brittle and will crack or crumble under vibration and load, so never fix into the plaster alone. Locate the joist above using your detector, or gently probe with a bradawl until you feel solid timber. Drill a pilot hole through the plaster and lath, then drive a coach screw long enough to go at least 40mm into solid joist timber beyond the lath thickness.

PR-09Fit the rail and hang the rackOffer the rack's rail or frame up to your marked and drilled points, and drive each screw home fully and evenly. Check the rail is level once all fixings are in — tightening one side much more than the other can warp a lightweight rail. Don't hang anything from it yet.
PR-10Load test before you use it properlyHang your heaviest pots and pans on the rack and leave it loaded for 24 hours. Check every fixing point for movement, cracking plaster, or a screw pulling loose, and tighten or re-fix anything that's shifted before trusting it with daily use.
PR-11Tidy upVacuum up all drilling dust and debris from the floor and worktops, fold away the dust sheet, and dispose of packaging. Give the rack a final wipe before hanging your pots and pans back on it.
