Fit a pull-up bar to a lath and plaster wall

Fit a pull-up bar safely by finding real structural support behind your wall, then testing it thoroughly before you hang your full weight from it.

AB-01Plan the job and gather your toolsChoose a spot with at least 2200mm of clear space below the bar so you can hang without hitting the floor or furniture. Clear the area, lay a dust sheet, and gather everything before you start so you're not hunting for tools mid-job. A pull-up bar takes real force, so this is not a quick picture-hanging job — treat it like a structural fixing.

AB-02Work out what's really behind the plasterLath and plaster is just the finish — it sits over timber studwork, or over timber battens fixed to solid brick or block. Tap the wall: solid masonry sounds dull throughout, a stud wall sounds hollow between studs and firmer over each one. Run a detector or a strong magnet across the wall at drilling height — regular points roughly 400-600mm apart are the nail heads holding the lath to studs. Lath and plaster is never fixed to modern metal studs, so if a detector picks up metal framework, you actually have plasterboard, not lath and plaster — different fixings apply. If still unsure, drill one small 3mm test hole: timber dust means a stud, crumbly grey dust means only plaster and lath with nothing solid behind.

AB-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillA pull-up bar pulls on the wall constantly, so any weak fixing is a real risk — don't skip this. Scan the wall with a detector, but don't trust it completely: deep cables, metal conduit, and lath and plaster's own metal or timber laths can all give false readings. Find your consumer unit and isolate the circuit for that room if you have any doubt, and check your stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — turns freely, so you can cut the water fast if you hit a pipe. Avoid drilling directly above or below any socket or switch, as cables often run straight up or down from them.

AB-04Find and mark your fixing pointsThe bar must fix into solid timber studs or noggins, or through to masonry — never into lath and plaster alone, which will crack under load. Mark at least two studs (or masonry points) at your chosen height, spaced to match your bracket's holes — usually 400-600mm apart. Draw a level line between the marks with a spirit level so the bar sits straight. If the studs don't line up with your bracket, fit a 50x50mm timber noggin between them to spread the load — get help if you're not confident doing this.

AB-05Drill and fit the right fixings for your wallTimber stud: drill a 4mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and use a coach screw at least 75mm long, going at least 50mm into the timber. Solid brick or block: drill a 10mm hole 60mm deep, fit a heavy-duty plug or resin anchor, then an M8 coach screw or bolt. Dot-and-dab plasterboard over masonry: the dabs alone won't hold — drill through the board and the void behind (often 20-50mm) into the masonry, using a fixing long enough to bite at least 40mm into solid material. Plasterboard on metal studs will not hold a pull-up bar on its own — the pulling force bends the thin steel — so screw a timber noggin between the studs using self-drilling screws, and fix into the noggin instead. If your marked point has nothing solid behind it, move the fixing rather than compromise.

AB-06Mount the bracket and barHold the bracket on your marked line and check it's level before fixing anything. Drive each screw or bolt fully home, checking the bracket doesn't rock or spin as you tighten — that's a sign you've missed the stud or masonry. Fit the bar into the bracket following the kit's instructions and tighten all locking bolts fully.

AB-07Load-test before you use itPush and pull hard on the bar in every direction before trusting it with your weight. Watch the wall around the fixings for movement, cracking, or falling dust. Hang gradually with bent knees, ready to step straight down if anything shifts, and check the fixings again after a week of use as timber and plaster can settle slightly.
AB-08Tidy upVacuum all drilling dust and the dust sheet, as plaster dust is fine and spreads easily. Fill any stray holes or small cracks with matching filler and touch up paint once dry. Keep spare fixings and the kit instructions somewhere safe in case you need to remove or refit the bar later.
