Fit a wall-mounted bike rack to a lath and plaster wall

Fit a wall-mounted bike rack safely, checking your wall type first and using a fixing strong enough to hold the bike's weight.

BR-01Plan the position and check the wallChoose a height that lets the bike hang clear of the floor and any nearby doorway or skirting. Check the wall isn't shared with a neighbour's flat if you're in a conversion — you don't need permission for a bike rack, but it's worth knowing what's on the other side. Hold the rack against the wall and mark the fixing hole centres with a pencil.

BR-02Find your stopcock and check for cables and pipesBefore you drill anything, find your stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink — and check it turns. Run a detector over the marked spots, but don't trust it completely: detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or outside the usual safe zones. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and be ready to shut off the water at the stopcock if you hit a pipe.
BR-03Confirm your wall is lath and plaster (and what's behind it)Lath and plaster is old timber laths nailed across studs or battens, with lime plaster keyed into the gaps between them — a pilot hole in this wall brings out crumbly white dust and sometimes a puff of loose grey debris, and it sounds hollow and slightly springy when you tap it. The laths themselves are too weak to hold a bike rack, so you need to find the timber stud or batten behind them. Tap and drill small pilot holes 30-40mm apart along your marked line until you feel solid resistance and see timber dust rather than crumbling plaster — that's your fixing point.
BR-04Know the other wall types, in case yours isn't lath and plasterSolid brick or block: drill with a masonry bit sized to your wall plug, to a depth of at least 50mm, and use a plug and screw rated for the load. Plasterboard on timber studs: a wood screw driven into the centre of the stud is enough; find the stud with a detector tracking a line of screw heads, or listen for the dense knock instead of a hollow one. Plasterboard on metal studs: a self-drilling or toggle-type hollow-wall anchor is required — a plain wall plug or ordinary wood screw strips straight through 0.5mm steel — and a small pilot hole into a metal stud brings out fine bright swarf rather than timber dust. Dot-and-dab plasterboard: the board sits on adhesive blobs over an air gap, so you need a fixing long enough to pass through the board and gap and bite into the masonry behind, typically 75-90mm.
BR-05Drill the fixing holesOn lath and plaster, drill slowly and steadily — going too fast can shatter the old plaster around the hole and crack the lath behind it. Support the wall gently with your free hand as the bit breaks through, and stop as soon as you feel it reach the timber. Drill through to a depth that lets your fixing sit fully in sound timber, not just the plaster skim.

BR-06Fit the right fixing for what's behind the lathsIf you found solid timber, use a long wood screw or coach screw (60-75mm) driven straight into the stud or batten — this is your main fixing. If the laths sit on battens over solid brick with only a shallow batten behind, use a longer fixing that passes through the batten into the masonry beyond, with a suitable wall plug for the extra depth. Never rely on the plaster or lath alone to hold the weight of a bike being lifted on and off the rack.

BR-07Fit and secure the bike rackHold the rack against the wall, line it up with your drilled holes, and drive the fixings home with a screwdriver or drill on a low torque setting so you don't overtighten and crack the plaster. Check the rack sits flush and level once fitted. Tighten fully but stop as soon as it's snug against the wall.
BR-08Load test before you trust itHang your bike and pull down firmly on the rack a few times to check nothing shifts or creaks. Watch the wall around the fixings for any sign of the plaster lifting or cracking. If anything moves, take the bike off straight away and refit into sound timber further along the stud.
BR-09Tidy upVacuum up plaster dust and any debris from the floor and skirting. Wipe down the wall around the fixing with a slightly damp cloth to remove dust marks. Put tools away and dispose of any broken lath or plaster fragments.
