Fit a row of coat hooks to a solid brick or block wall

Plan spacing, drill, plug and screw a row of coat hooks so they sit level and hold weight safely.

CH-01Plan the spacing and mark the wallDecide how many hooks you need and space them 150-200mm apart so coats don't overlap. Mark the height with a pencil - 1400-1500mm from the floor works for adults, lower for children. Use a spirit level to draw a straight horizontal line through your marks before you drill anything.

CH-02Check for cables and pipes before you drillRun a detector over each marked point - cables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones. Even with a clear reading, treat the wall as if something could still be there. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.

CH-03Drill the pilot holesFit a masonry bit sized to match your wall plugs - for a standard coat hook screw, use a 6mm bit with 6mm plugs. Drill straight into the brick or block to a depth of about 35-40mm, slightly deeper than the plug length so it seats fully. Let the drill do the work and stop if you hit resistance that feels wrong - it may be a service you missed.

CH-04Fit the wall plugsPush a 6mm wall plug into each hole until it sits flush with the wall surface. If a plug spins instead of gripping, the hole is slightly oversized - swap to the next size up plug rather than forcing it. Brush away any dust before fitting the plug so it seats properly.

CH-05Screw the hooks in placeLine each hook up with its plug and drive in a 40mm screw, checking it feels solid and doesn't spin freely. Tighten fully but don't overtighten, as this can crack cheap fittings or crumble the plug. Re-check the row with a spirit level once all hooks are fitted.

CH-06Test the fixings and tidy upHang a coat or bag on each hook and pull down firmly to check the fixing holds without moving. Vacuum up any brick dust from the floor and skirting below. Wipe down the wall and hooks so they're ready to use.
