SC-02Check for cables and pipes, and know your shut-offsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, so sweep the area with a detector before you drill. Even with a clear reading, treat the wall as if something is still there — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit first, and turn off the water at the stopcock before drilling near any pipework.
