Fit a smart light switch and check for a neutral

Turn off the power, check whether your lighting circuit has a neutral wire, then fit and test a smart switch safely.

SLS-01Check the smart switch is compatibleRead the manufacturer's instructions before you start. Note whether the switch needs a neutral wire, what load type it supports (LED, halogen, dimmable), and its minimum back box depth — most smart switches need at least 25-35mm because of the built-in electronics. Gather insulated screwdrivers, a voltage tester, a torch and a dust sheet.

SLS-02Turn off the power and prove it's deadSwitch off the lighting circuit at the consumer unit and lock it off if you can. Prove the switch wires are dead with your voltage tester before you touch anything. Don't rely on the wall switch alone — always test at the terminals.
SLS-03Remove the old switch and check the boxUnscrew the faceplate and pull it gently away from the wall. Photograph the wiring before you disconnect anything — you'll want this reference later. Measure the depth of the existing back box; if it's shallower than the smart switch needs, you'll have to deepen or replace it.

SLS-04Work out your wall type before drillingIf you need a new or deeper box, you must know what's behind the plaster first. Run a stud detector or a magnet along the wall — a line of screw heads roughly 400-600mm apart means a stud wall. Tap either side of the box: a dull thud usually means solid masonry or dot-and-dab, a hollow sound means a stud cavity. A small pilot hole that brings out pale timber dust means a timber stud; fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud. Dot-and-dab plasterboard sits over solid masonry with an air gap behind it, so it sounds semi-hollow and taps differently to a stud wall.
SLS-05Check for cables and pipes before you drill or cutCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual 'safe zones'. Use a cable and pipe detector, but still assume something could be there and prove otherwise as you drill slowly. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns — if you hit a pipe you need to shut the water off fast. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the lighting circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
SLS-06Fit the new box or pattress for your wall typeSolid brick or block: drill a 6mm hole to 35mm depth, insert a red wall plug, and fix with a 35mm wood screw. Timber stud: drive a 35mm wood screw straight into the centre of the stud — no plug needed. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the weight; never use a plain plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw, as it will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Dot-and-dab: use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard and air gap and bite into the solid masonry behind, typically 50-60mm. Lath and plaster: fix into a lath where you can find one, or use a plasterboard-rated toggle fixing to spread the load, since old plaster is brittle and cracks easily under pressure. A light switch is low load, so a stud or masonry fixing is enough — you don't need a noggin for this.

SLS-07Identify whether you have a neutral wireLook inside the box for a spare wire that isn't connected to the switch — often capped with insulating tape or a small connector and sleeved in blue or grey. That's your neutral. Older two-wire switch drops with just a live and switched live, and no spare capped wire, mean no neutral is present. If you're not certain, don't guess — treat it as no neutral and follow the next step.
SLS-08Wire in the smart switchFollow the manufacturer's wiring diagram exactly. If a neutral is present, connect line, switched line and neutral as shown. If there's no neutral, don't force it — fit a no-neutral compatible smart switch or add a small neutral-free relay module instead, as running the electronics off the switched live alone can cause flickering or damage the switch.

SLS-09Fix the faceplate and boxScrew the box securely to the fixing you fitted earlier, then attach the faceplate with its plate screws. Tighten plasterboard fixings gently — overtightening can crack the board or crush a hollow-wall toggle.

SLS-10Restore power and testTurn the circuit back on at the consumer unit. Test the switch manually and through the app, and check the light doesn't flicker or buzz. Replacing a light switch like this is normally not notifiable work, but if the switch is in a bathroom or another special location, different rules apply and you should check before you start.

In England, swapping a light switch is usually non-notifiable under Part P as long as it's not in a bathroom or other special location and doesn't involve a new circuit. If you're unsure, or the work is in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland where rules differ, check current Building Regulations guidance or ask a registered electrician.

SLS-11Tidy upVacuum any plaster or brick dust from the wall and floor. Dispose of the old switch and packaging responsibly, and keep the manufacturer's manual for future reference or troubleshooting the app pairing.
