Buy the right extension lead, check the load, keep it uncoiled and never overload a socket.
EL-01Work out what you're plugging inAdd up the wattage of everything you plan to run at once. Most UK extension leads and sockets are rated at 13A, which is about 3000W on a 230V supply. Check the wattage on the label or plug of each appliance. If your total is close to 3000W, or you're running something like a heater and a kettle together, use a fixed wall socket instead.
EL-02Choose the right extension leadPick a lead with enough sockets for the job, not more than you need. For indoor use in a dry room, a standard 13A extension lead is fine. For outdoors, in a shed, or anywhere damp, use a lead marked IP44 or higher and plug it into a socket with RCD protection.
EL-03Inspect it before every useCheck the cable for cuts, cracks, or fraying, especially near the plug and where it enters the sockets. Check the plug isn't cracked and the pins aren't bent. If anything looks damaged, stop and replace the lead. Don't tape it up and carry on using it.
EL-04Position the lead safelyRun the lead where no one will trip over it, and keep it away from water, a wet floor, a sink, or an outside tap. Never run a cable under a carpet or rug, as this hides damage and traps heat. Don't let it trail across a doorway or stairs.
EL-05Uncoil the lead fully before useAlways unwind an extension lead completely, especially when powering something like a heater, kettle, or power tool. A cable left coiled or looped can overheat under load and melt its insulation, even if it looks fine on the outside.
EL-06Never overload it or daisy-chain leadsOnly run one high-wattage appliance, such as a heater, kettle, or iron, from an extension lead at a time. Don't plug one extension lead into another. This is called daisy-chaining, and it multiplies the risk of overload and overheating. If you need power in more rooms, use separate leads from separate wall sockets.
EL-07Using a lead outdoorsOnly use an extension lead outside if it's specifically rated for outdoor use, and keep the plug and socket connection off the ground, ideally under cover. Always plug it into a socket with RCD protection, which cuts the power in a fraction of a second if there's a fault. If your socket doesn't have this built in, use a plug-in RCD adapter.
EL-08Tidy up after useUnplug the lead at the wall, not just at the appliance end. Coil it loosely rather than winding it tightly around your hand or a hook, as this can damage the wires inside over time. Store it somewhere dry.
