Fit pleated blinds to a uPVC window frame

Measure your window, fix brackets to the uPVC frame, then clip in and test your new pleated blind.

PB-01Check the frame and gather your kitWipe down the uPVC frame and check it's sound, with no cracks or soft spots where you'll be fixing brackets. Unpack the blind kit and check all brackets, screws and the pleated fabric are present. Get together a tape measure, pencil, spirit level and a small cordless drill/driver.

PB-02Measure the windowMost pleated blinds for uPVC windows clip onto the frame face rather than sitting inside the recess. Measure the width and drop at three points top, middle and bottom, and use the smallest figure so the blind isn't too tight. Check your kit's fitting sheet, as bracket spacing depends on the blind's width.

PB-03Mark the bracket positionsHold the top rail against the frame and mark the screw holes with a pencil, checking it's level with a spirit level. Space brackets evenly — one near each end, plus one in the middle for anything wider than 1000mm. Keep every mark at least 20mm from the frame edge so the uPVC doesn't split.

PB-04Drill pilot holes in the frameUse a small pilot bit, around 2mm, and drill just deep enough for the self-tapping screw — uPVC frames often have a steel reinforcing bar inside, so don't force the drill if it feels solid. Drill straight and slowly to avoid cracking the plastic around the hole.

PB-05Fix the top bracketsDrive the self-tapping screws in with a screwdriver or a slow drill setting. Stop as soon as the bracket sits snug — overtightening can crack uPVC. Recheck the brackets are level before you move on.

PB-06Fit any bottom or intermediate bracketsIf your blind has a bottom rail or a 'perfect fit' frame, repeat the marking and drilling steps for the lower brackets, keeping everything square to the top rail. Some kits offer no-drill adhesive clips instead — check the instructions if you'd rather skip drilling altogether.

PB-07Clip the blind into placeLift the headrail up into the top brackets and press until it clicks home. If there's a bottom rail, guide it into its brackets and pull gently to seat it fully.

PB-08Fit the safety cleat for corded blindsIf your blind has a pull cord or chain, screw the safety cleat to the frame or nearby wall, well out of reach of young children, and wind the cord around it after every use. Never leave a loose length of cord hanging free.

KNOW THE RULES

UK regulations require corded blinds to be supplied with a child safety device (cleat, tensioner or breakaway connector). Fit and use it as the manufacturer instructs to reduce strangulation risk to young children.

PB-09Test and adjustOpen and close the blind fully to check it runs smoothly and sits level on both sides. If the fabric hangs unevenly, loosen a bracket screw slightly, nudge it square, and retighten.

PB-10Tidy upClear away packaging and any uPVC dust or offcuts. Store spare screws in a labelled bag in case you need them later. Give the blind another test after a day of normal use to check nothing has worked loose.
