Line window panes with clear film and tape to cut draughts and heat loss without touching the existing glazing.
SG-01Clean the window frameWipe the whole frame and the glass with a damp cloth to remove dust and grease, then dry it fully with a lint-free cloth. Any dirt or damp under the tape will stop it sticking properly. Try to work when the room is above about 10°C, since cold frames make the tape grip poorly.
SG-02Measure and cut the filmMeasure the width and height of each pane you're covering, then add 50mm extra on every side. Lay the film flat and cut it to size with scissors or a utility knife, keeping the edges as straight as you can. Cutting it oversized gives you room to trim neatly once it's fixed.
SG-03Tape around the frameStick the double-sided tape from the kit around the inside edge of the window frame, keeping it a few mm in from the very edge. Peel the backing off gradually as you go so it stays clean and doesn't pick up dust. Press it down firmly along its whole length.
SG-04Fix the film to the tapeStarting at one top corner, press the film edge onto the tape, then work along the top, down both sides, and finally the bottom. Pull it gently taut as you go, but don't stretch it hard. Smooth out any big wrinkles by hand once it's all stuck down.
SG-05Trim off the excessRun a utility knife along the outer edge of the tape to trim off the spare film, using a straightedge to keep the line neat. Go slowly near corners so you don't cut into the tape or frame finish.
SG-06Shrink the film tautSet a hairdryer to medium heat and hold it 150-200mm from the film, moving it in slow circles across the whole pane. The film will pull tight and the wrinkles will disappear as it warms. Keep the dryer moving so you don't scorch one spot, and don't let it touch the film.
SG-07Check the seal and tidy upRun your finger around every edge to check the film is fully stuck down, pressing back any corners that have lifted. Wipe down the sill and surrounding surfaces, and store any leftover film and tape flat somewhere dry for next time.
