Fix a curtain pole that's pulling out of the wall

Fix a curtain pole that keeps pulling free from the wall, working out why it failed and refitting it securely for your wall type.

CP-01Work out why the fixing failedLook at the bracket and the hole behind it. If a wall plug came out still attached to the screw, the plug or screw was too small for the wall or the load. If plasterboard has crumbled or plaster has come away in lumps, the wall itself has given way, not just the fixing. Heavy, lined or interlined curtains put far more strain on a pole than light nets, so check whether the original fixing was ever strong enough.
CP-02Gather your toolsYou'll need a cordless drill with masonry, wood and general-purpose bits, a screwdriver, a spirit level, a pencil and a tape measure. A cable and pipe detector is essential before you drill anything. Lay a dust sheet below the window to catch debris and protect the sill.

CP-03Check for pipes and cables before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones' near sockets and switches. Run your detector over the whole area, but still treat it as a guess — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
CP-04Identify your wall typeTap the wall above the window. A dull, solid sound usually means brick or block; a hollow sound means plasterboard on a stud wall or dot-and-dab. Drag a magnet or stud detector sideways to find a line of screw heads — this tells you where the studs run. Drill a small pilot hole in scrap or an inconspicuous spot: fine timber dust means a timber stud, silvery swarf means a metal stud, and a hollow gap of 40-60mm behind the board with no stud contact suggests dot-and-dab over masonry. Lath and plaster feels slightly springy and sounds a bit hollow but has a much older, more textured plaster finish, usually in pre-1930s houses.
CP-05Remove the old bracket and make good the holeUnscrew the failed bracket and pull out any broken plug or debris. If the hole in plasterboard has crumbled larger than about 15mm, fill it with multi-purpose filler and let it dry fully, usually 1-2 hours, before refixing. In masonry, brush out loose dust and old plug fragments so the new plug seats properly.

CP-06Fix into solid brick or blockDrill a 7mm hole about 35-40mm deep, matching your wall plug size, using a masonry bit and hammer action if the wall is brick. Insert a red or brown wall plug rated for the bracket screws, then drive in a 40-50mm screw until the bracket sits flush and doesn't wobble. This is the strongest fixing available and will comfortably hold a heavy curtain pole.

CP-07Fix into plasterboard on timber studsLine the bracket up so its fixing hole sits in the centre of the stud, not the edge, where timber is likely to split. Drill a 2-3mm pilot hole to stop the wood cracking, then drive in a 4x50mm wood screw directly into the stud — no plug needed. This is a strong fixing as long as the screw bites at least 25mm into solid timber.

CP-08Fix into plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel and the bracket will fail again within days. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load, driven straight through the plasterboard into the metal track. A curtain pole with heavy or interlined curtains puts a real pulling load on the wall, so if the pole feels heavy when loaded, it's worth fitting a timber noggin between the studs, or fixing one bracket through to a stud and the other to a toggle, rather than relying on plasterboard alone.

CP-09Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard is fixed to masonry with dabs of adhesive, leaving a gap of roughly 20-50mm behind the board in places. Push a long thin screwdriver or bradawl gently through your pilot hole first to check the depth of this gap. Use a long frame fixing, at least 90-100mm, that passes through the plasterboard, the void, and into the masonry behind — a short fixing will only grip the board and pull straight out under load.

CP-10Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster walls have thin timber laths behind the plaster, spaced with gaps between them, so a standard plug will just crumble the old lime plaster. Locate a lath or a solid timber batten with your detector or by tapping gently, then use a long screw that reaches at least 25mm into the timber behind. If you can't find solid timber to fix into, use a spring toggle rated for the load, taking care not to over-tighten and crack the surrounding plaster.

CP-11Refit brackets and hang the poleHold the bracket in place and check it's level with a spirit level before marking your final fixing points — a pole even a few mm out of level looks wrong across a whole window. Fix both brackets using the method for your wall type, then hang the pole and test it by pulling gently outward and downward, mimicking how curtains are opened and closed. Hang the curtains and check nothing sags or creaks under their full weight.
CP-12Tidy upVacuum up plaster or masonry dust from the sill and floor, and wipe down the wall around the brackets. Bin any old, damaged wall plugs or screws rather than reusing them. Fold away your dust sheet once everything is dry and settled.
