Fix a leaking washing machine standpipe

Stop a leaking washing machine standpipe by finding the leak, fixing it, and securely reclipping the pipe to your wall.

SP-01Turn off the water and unplug the machineTurn off the isolating valve for the washing machine — usually a small lever on the pipe behind the machine or under the sink. Unplug the machine from the socket before you touch anything. Pull the machine forward gently, keeping the hoses attached, and lay old towels down to catch drips.

SP-02Find your stopcock and check it worksLocate your main stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and turn it a quarter turn to make sure it moves freely. You'll need this so you can shut the water off fast if anything goes wrong later. If it's stiff or won't turn, free it up now, not during an emergency.
SP-03Find where the leak is coming fromShine a torch along the drain hose, the trap, and the standpipe itself for wet patches, drips, or a crack. Pour a jug of water slowly down the standpipe, or run a short rinse cycle, and watch where water escapes. Common causes are a loose hose clip, a worn washer on a compression joint, or a cracked section of pipe.

SP-04Fix or replace the faulty partIf a compression nut is loose, tighten it by hand then a further quarter turn with a spanner — don't overtighten or you'll crack the fitting. If the olive or washer inside is worn, undo the nut, slide on a new olive, and reassemble. If the standpipe itself is cracked, cut out the damaged section with a pipe saw and join in a new length using push-fit fittings.

SP-05Reset the drain hose in the standpipePush the washing machine drain hose into the standpipe so it sits about 100-150mm inside — no deeper. Leave a clear air gap above the water level so waste water can't get siphoned back into the machine. Hold the hose with a proper hose clip or the manufacturer's clip, not tape or string. Standpipes are normally cut to around 600-900mm high — check this hasn't shifted.

SP-06Check what's behind the wall before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the marked 'safe zones', so use a detector on the wall where you'll fix the pipe clip — but still treat it as if something's there. Detectors can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board, and metal stud frames confuse cheap detectors further. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and keep the stopcock you checked earlier within reach.
SP-07Work out what kind of wall you're fixing intoRun a stud detector or a small magnet up and down the wall — a line of screw heads under the surface means a timber or metal stud wall. Tap the wall: a dull thud is a stud or masonry, a hollow sound is the gap between studs or the void behind dot-and-dab plasterboard. Drill a small pilot hole — fine timber dust means a timber stud, bright metal swarf means a metal stud, and solid resistance all the way means brick or block.

SP-08Fit the pipe clip with the right fixing for your wallTimber stud: use a wood screw driven into the centre of the stud, not the plasterboard either side. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor — never a plastic wall plug or ordinary wood screw, both strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Solid brick or block: drill to the plug's stated depth with the matching bit size and use a plug and screw. Dot-and-dab: use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard and adhesive dabs into the masonry behind, typically 60-75mm. Lath and plaster: use a spring toggle or a long screw located into a timber batten, and don't overtighten or you'll crack the plaster. Pipe clips are light, so a hollow-wall fixing is fine on its own — you don't need a noggin for this.

SP-09Reconnect everything and test for leaksRefit the trap and hose, and turn the isolating valve back on slowly while checking every joint you touched. Run a short rinse cycle and watch the standpipe, trap, and hose the whole way through, including the drain phase. Wipe a dry tissue along each joint — any dampness on the tissue means it still needs tightening.
SP-10Tidy up and put the machine backDispose of any old pipe offcuts and packaging responsibly. Wipe the floor and skirting dry, and check for any lingering damp under the machine over the next day. Push the machine back into place, reconnect the plug, and do a final check after a full wash cycle.
