Plumb in a washing machine

Connect your washing machine to the water, waste and power safely, then test it before pushing it back into place.

WM-01Check the existing plumbing and spacePull the spot where the machine will go clear and look for a washing machine valve on the cold supply, a waste standpipe with a trap, and a nearby double socket. Measure the gap - most machines need at least 600mm width and 850mm height, plus room behind for hoses to bend without kinking. Check the valve, standpipe and socket are all within reach of the machine's hoses, usually about 1.5m long.

WM-02Find your stopcock and prove it worksBefore you touch any pipework, find your stopcock - usually under the kitchen sink - and turn it clockwise fully to check it moves freely and stops the water. Turn it back on afterwards. Knowing exactly where it is, and that it works, means you can shut the water off in seconds if anything leaks later in this job.
WM-03Fit a washing machine valve if there isn't oneIf there's no existing valve, turn the stopcock off and drain the pipe before cutting into it. Fit a tee or self-cutting saddle valve following the maker's instructions, then fit a washing machine isolating valve with a built-in double check valve, positioned so the handle is reachable once the machine is in place. Wrap the thread with PTFE tape before tightening any joint.

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require a backflow prevention device (a double check valve) on washing machine connections, to stop dirty water siphoning back into the mains.

WM-04Fix the valve bracket to the wall safelyBefore drilling, scan the wall with a cable and pipe detector - then still expect something to be there and prove otherwise, since detectors miss deep cables, armoured cable and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard. Turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water, and isolate the circuit at the consumer unit first if you're at all unsure what's behind the surface. Work out what's behind the plaster: a magnet or stud detector will pick up a line of screw heads over a stud, tapping sounds hollow between studs and solid over one, and a small pilot hole brings out pale timber dust for a wood stud or fine grey swarf for a metal one. On solid brick or block, drill a 6mm hole 40mm deep, fit a wall plug and drive in a 40mm screw. On plasterboard over timber studs, screw straight into the centre of the stud with a 40mm woodscrew, no plug needed. On plasterboard over metal studs, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a hollow-wall toggle - never a plastic plug or wood screw, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to cross the 30-50mm dab gap and bite into the masonry behind, as a standard 40mm screw usually won't reach. On lath and plaster, find a timber lath or the joist behind it and drill a pilot hole first so the old plaster doesn't crack. This bracket is light, but if you're ever fixing something heavier or something that pulls sideways on a metal stud, fit a timber noggin between the studs or fix through to the masonry behind instead.

WM-05Connect the fill hose to the valveScrew the angled end of the fill hose onto the washing machine's inlet, hand-tight plus a quarter turn - don't overtighten plastic fittings. Connect the straight end to the wall valve the same way, checking the rubber washer inside the hose end is seated properly before you tighten it.

WM-06Connect the waste hose to the standpipePush the crooked end of the waste hose into the top of the standpipe, hooked over the rim rather than pushed hard down, so it can't create a siphon that empties the drum during the wash. The standpipe should sit between 600mm and 1000mm off the floor. Secure the hose with a clip if there's any risk it could slip out.

WM-07Slide the machine into place and level itIf this is a new machine, remove the transit bolts from the back first - check the manual, as running it with these still fitted will damage it. Slide the machine into position, then use a spirit level on top and adjust the feet until it's level in both directions. Tighten the locking nuts on the feet once level so it can't rock during a spin cycle.

WM-08Turn the water back on and check the socketOpen the stopcock and the new valve fully, then watch every joint you've touched for a few minutes for any sign of dripping. Tighten gently if needed - don't force it. Plug the machine into its own socket rather than an extension lead, and check the plug and socket are in good condition with no cracks or scorch marks.
WM-09Run a short test cycleRun a quick wash with no clothes in it and watch the fill, wash and drain stages. Check the valve, hose connections and standpipe again while it runs, and check the floor underneath once it's finished for any sign of water.
WM-10Push back into place and tidy upOnce you're happy there are no leaks, push the machine gently back against the wall, leaving a little slack in both hoses so nothing kinks. Tidy away your tools, wipe down the floor and worktop, and make a note of where your stopcock and washing machine valve are for next time.
