Fix a wobbly basin pedestal

Find why your basin wobbles, secure the pedestal and wall bracket properly, then reseal for a solid, leak-free finish.

FP-01Clear the area and gather your toolsEmpty the cabinet under the basin and move rugs or bath mats out of the way. Lay a towel or dust sheet on the floor to catch drips and dust. Get your tools together, and if you can see isolation valves under the basin, turn them off to stop drips while you work.

FP-02Work out what's actually wobblingKneel down and gently rock the basin side to side and front to back. If the movement is at the floor, the pedestal foot fixing has failed. If it's where the basin meets the wall, the wall bracket has come loose. Check both, as many basins wobble for both reasons at once.
FP-03Tighten or refit the pedestal floor fixingMost pedestals have a small fixing hole at the base. If the screw is just loose, remove it, then refit it into a timber floorboard, or into a wall plug if the floor is solid concrete or screed. Don't overtighten - the pedestal isn't structural, it just needs to stop sliding.

FP-04Work out what's behind the wall before you touch the bracketRun a stud detector, or a strong magnet, across the wall where the bracket fixes - a magnet catches on the screw heads holding plasterboard to a timber or metal frame, so you can follow the line of studs. Tap the wall: a dull, solid sound means brick, block, or lath and plaster over masonry; a hollow sound between studs means a stud wall or dot-and-dab plasterboard. A small pilot hole helps confirm it - pale dust means timber or masonry, fine grey swarf means metal stud.
FP-05Safety check before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a bathroom wall. A detector helps, but it can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed plasterboard, so still assume something's there until you've proven otherwise. Before drilling, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you're at all unsure what's behind the wall, isolate the electrics at the consumer unit and turn off the water at the stopcock before drilling.
FP-06Refix the wall bracket for your wall typeSolid brick or block: drill a 6mm hole 40-50mm deep, insert a wall plug, and drive in a 4x40mm screw. Timber stud: screw a 4x40mm wood screw straight into the centre of the stud, no plug needed. Metal stud: never use a wood screw or plastic plug, they strip straight through 0.5mm steel - use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a rated toggle-type hollow-wall anchor, and if the bracket takes real sideways pressure, fit a timber noggin between the studs first, since a basin pulls on its fixing every time someone leans on it. Dot-and-dab: use a long fixing (60-75mm) that passes through the plasterboard and adhesive dabs to bite into the solid wall behind. Lath and plaster: find the timber stud or joist behind the laths and screw into that, as plaster alone will crack under the basin's weight.

FP-07Pack and stabilise the pedestalIf the pedestal still rocks once refitted, slide thin plastic or timber packers into the gap between the pedestal top and the underside of the basin until it sits snugly. Don't let the pedestal try to take all the basin's weight - it should just steady it, while the wall bracket carries the real load. Check with a spirit level that the basin sits level.

FP-08Reseal the basin to the wall and floorRun a thin bead of sanitary silicone along the join between the basin and the wall, and around the base of the pedestal if it meets the floor. Smooth it with a wet finger for a neat, waterproof finish. Leave it to cure for the time stated on the tube, usually 24 hours, before running water.

FP-09Turn the water back on and check for leaksTurn the isolation valves back on and run both taps for a minute. Check underneath and around the pedestal for any drips. Gently push the basin again to make sure the wobble is gone.
FP-10Tidy upWipe away any excess sealant, dust or debris. Put your tools away and dispose of any old screws or broken fixings safely. Give the basin a final wipe down.
