Hang a wall planter on a solid brick or block wall
Fix a wall planter safely to solid brick or block, checking for hidden cables and pipes before you drill.
WP-01Plan the job and gather your toolsWeigh or estimate the loaded planter — compost and a watered plant can easily reach 10-15kg. Pick a spot on solid wall, not directly above a socket or light switch, and decide the height. Lay out your drill, masonry bit, spirit level, pencil, and the fixings sized for the weight.
WP-02Mark your fixing pointsHold the planter or bracket against the wall at the height you want and mark each fixing hole with a pencil. Use the spirit level to check the marks are level with each other, not just level-looking by eye. Space two fixing points at least 100mm apart for a stable hang.
WP-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillRun a cable and pipe detector over both marked points, but do not trust it completely — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or outside the normal safe zones near sockets and switches. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
WP-04Drill into the brick or block, not the mortarAim for solid brick or block rather than the mortar joint between them — mortar is weaker and can crumble over the years. Fit a masonry bit matching your plug size, usually 6mm, and drill to a depth about 5mm longer than your screw. Drill in short bursts and let the bit clear its own dust so it doesn't overheat.
WP-05Fit the wall plugsBlow or vacuum the dust out of each hole so the plug seats properly. Push a 6mm wall plug into each hole until it sits flush with the wall surface. If a plug spins or feels loose, the hole is too big — pull it out and use a slightly larger plug instead.
WP-06Drive in the fixing screwsDrive a 60mm No.8 screw into each plug, leaving about 10-15mm standing clear of the wall to hook or hang the bracket on, depending on your planter's design. Don't overtighten — a plug that spins in the hole has lost its grip and needs redoing.
WP-07Hang the planter and check it's secureLift the planter or bracket onto the screws and check it sits level using your spirit level. Give it a firm downward tug to make sure it's gripping properly before you add compost or water. Load it gradually rather than all at once, checking the fixings hold as the weight increases.
WP-08Tidy upVacuum or sweep up brick dust from the floor and windowsill. Wipe down your tools and put the leftover plugs and screws somewhere you'll find them for next time. Wash your hands, especially before handling food or touching your face.
