EC-02Check for cables and pipes, and know your shut-offsCeiling voids can hide cables running to lights, smoke alarms or loft power, and pipework if there's a bathroom above. Run a detector over the whole area, but treat it as a guide, not a guarantee - detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed board. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns before you start. If you have any doubt at all about what's behind the ceiling, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and know how to shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe.
