HANGING & WALL MOUNTING

Fit an ironing board holder to a solid brick or block wall

Fit a wall-mounted ironing board holder to solid brick or block, checking for hidden pipes and cables before drilling.

IB-01Mark the fixing positionHold the holder against the wall at a comfortable working height, usually around 900-1000mm from the floor. Use a spirit level to keep it straight, then mark the two (or more) fixing holes with a pencil. Check there is enough clearance above and to the side for the board to swing open fully.

IB-02Check for cables and pipes, and get ready to drill safelyRun a detector over your marked points, but don't trust it completely — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or outside the usual safe zones near sockets and switches. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns before you start. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and be ready to shut off the water at the stopcock if you hit a pipe.

IB-03Drill the fixing holesUse a 6mm masonry bit for standard red wall plugs, or match the bit to the plug size given with your holder. Drill straight into the brick or block to a depth a few mm deeper than the plug length, keeping the drill level. Blow or vacuum the dust out of each hole, then push a wall plug in until it sits flush.

1 pack · Wall plugs (Rawlplug), pack of 10
IB-04Screw the bracket in placeLine the holder up with the plugged holes and drive the screws in until the bracket sits tight against the wall. Don't overtighten, as this can crack the plug or the wall surface. Check the holder is level once fixed.

1 each · Screwdriver
IB-05Test the holder and tidy upHang the ironing board and gently pull on it to check the fixing holds firm with no movement in the wall. Wipe away any dust around the fixing, and vacuum debris from the floor. Store any leftover plugs and screws for future small jobs.
