Hang pictures without drilling using adhesive strips
Hang picture frames securely with adhesive strips, matched to frame weight, without drilling or damaging your wall.
AS-01Weigh your frame and choose the right stripWeigh the frame, or check the weight on the box if it's new. Pick a strip rated above that weight — most small strips hold up to 900g per pair, large ones up to several kilograms per set. Don't mix strip brands or sizes on one frame, and always use the full number of strips the packaging recommends.
AS-02Check what your wall surface actually isSmooth painted plaster or plasterboard is ideal — strips grip well. Wallpaper can work, but test on a hidden bit first, as strips can pull the paper off when removed. Avoid textured coatings like Artex or pebbledash-style finishes — strips won't get enough contact to hold. Bare, unpainted new plaster is too chalky and porous; it needs at least one coat of paint first.
AS-03Clean the wall where the frame will sitWipe the area with a cloth dampened in methylated spirit or isopropyl alcohol, then let it dry fully. Dust, grease and polish stop the adhesive bonding properly. If the wall's been freshly painted, wait at least 24 hours before sticking anything to it, so the paint fully cures.
AS-04Mark and level the positionHold the frame where you want it, or measure and mark with a pencil. Use a spirit level to make sure the top edge is level, and a strip of painter's tape as a temporary guide line. Step back and check the position from a few metres away before committing.
AS-05Fit the strips to the framePeel the backing off one side of each strip and press it onto the back of the frame, near the corners, following the packaging layout. Press firmly for the time stated on the pack — usually around 30 seconds per strip — so the adhesive bonds properly to the frame.
AS-06Press the frame onto the wallLine the frame up with your marks, then press firmly along every strip for at least 30 seconds. Use the flat of your hand, not just your fingertips, so the pressure is even across each strip. Don't let go until you're sure it's holding its own weight.
AS-07Leave it to bond before checking itLeave the frame alone for the time stated on the packaging — usually at least one hour, sometimes longer for heavier frames — before you nudge it, straighten it, or hang anything else nearby. The adhesive needs this time to reach full strength.
AS-08Tidy upPeel off the painter's tape guide line and wipe away any pencil marks with a damp cloth. Bin the strip backing papers. Keep the leftover strips in their pack for the next picture.
