Mount a full-motion TV bracket on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit a full-motion TV bracket safely, checking what's behind the wall and fixing through to solid backing for lasting support.

TV-01Plan the job and gather your kitUnpack the bracket and check the fitting kit, the weight rating, and the screw hole spacing on the back of your TV (the VESA pattern). Decide on a height and position, thinking about viewing angle, socket positions, and how cables will reach the TV. Clear the area below and lay a dust sheet, since you'll be drilling overhead debris down onto the floor.

TV-02Work out what's actually behind the wallDon't assume — dot-and-dab, a timber stud wall, a metal stud wall, and lath and plaster all look similar under paint but need completely different fixings. Run a stud detector or magnet across the area in a grid; a magnet catching on a line of screw heads at regular centres means studs. Tap the wall: a dull thud usually means solid masonry or a stud directly behind, a hollow drum sound means plasterboard with an air gap behind. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: fine pale dust means plasterboard or masonry, coarse timber shavings mean a wood stud, and bright metal swarf means a steel stud. Dot-and-dab typically has a 20-50mm air gap behind the board before you reach solid brick or block.

TV-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the usual safe zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector. Sweep the whole fixing area with your detector, but still assume something could be there even after a clear reading — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and don't drill into any area you can't rule out for water pipes without turning the stopcock off first.
TV-04Mark and level the bracket positionHold the bracket plate against the wall at your chosen height and mark the top edge with a pencil. Use a spirit level to draw a true horizontal line, then mark each fixing hole through the plate. Double-check the marks line up with where you found solid backing (stud, or masonry behind the dab) in step 2.

TV-05Drill and fix the bracket — method depends on your wallOn dot-and-dab: never rely on the plasterboard or the dab alone for a full-motion arm, since the leverage will pull it straight off the wall. Drill through the board and the dab gap into the masonry behind using a long masonry bit, then fit long frame fixings (M8, around 100-120mm) that pass through the board and dab and grip at least 40mm into solid brick or block. On solid brick or block: drill with a 10mm masonry bit to a depth of 60-65mm, fit a matching wall plug, and use an M8 coach screw or bolt. On a timber stud wall: drive an M8 coach screw or a heavy-duty wood screw (70-80mm) into the centre of each stud — if the bracket holes don't land on studs, fit a timber noggin (100x50mm) between the studs first. On a metal stud wall: a metal stud alone will not hold a full-motion arm — the constant pulling force will bend or tear the 0.5mm steel. Fit a plywood pattress or timber noggin between the studs using self-drilling metal-stud screws, then fix the bracket to that; never use a plain plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud, as it strips straight through. On lath and plaster: the laths are thin and brittle, so locate the timber studs behind them (they're often spaced wider than modern stud walls) and fix into their centres with long screws, or fit a noggin behind for extra support.

TV-06Fit the bracket plate securelyHold the plate against the wall, line it up with your marks, and drive in the fixings you chose in step 5. Tighten evenly rather than fully tightening one side first, so the plate sits flat against the wall. Give the plate a firm tug test before moving on — it shouldn't flex or creak.
TV-07Attach the TV to the bracket armWith a helper if the TV is large, screw the arm's VESA plate to the back of the TV using the bolts supplied with the bracket — don't overtighten, as this can crack the TV casing. Lift the TV onto the wall plate and lock it into place following the bracket's own instructions, usually a clip or a locking bolt.
TV-08Route and dress the cablesRoute power and HDMI cables down the wall using cable clips or slim trunking, keeping them clear of the bracket's moving joints. Leave enough slack for the arm to extend fully without pulling on any cable. Fit the trunking cover last, once you've checked everything runs and moves properly.

TV-09Test the arm and tidy upExtend, swivel and tilt the bracket through its full range to check it moves smoothly and the TV stays level. Check all fixings are still tight after movement, especially on dot-and-dab or metal stud fixings. Sweep up drilling dust, fold away the dust sheet, and stand back to check the TV sits level from a normal seated view.
