Clean, repair, prime and paint a concrete floor in stages, letting each coat dry fully before the next.
PF-01Clear the room and ventilateMove furniture out, or push it to one side and cover it. Open windows and doors, since floor paint fumes can be strong in an enclosed space. If you want crisp edges, run low-tack masking tape along the skirting where it meets the floor.
PF-02Check the floor is dry enough to paintConcrete and screed hold moisture for a long time, especially if it's new. Tape a piece of clear plastic sheet to the floor overnight; if there's condensation underneath the next morning, the floor is too wet to paint. Wait and test again rather than risk the paint peeling later.
PF-03Fill cracks and holesRake out any loose material from cracks or chips. Fill with a concrete repair filler using a filling knife, pressing it in firmly and smoothing level with the surrounding floor. Leave to cure fully - check the tin, usually around 24 hours - before you sand it flush.
PF-04Clean and degrease the floorSweep the floor, then vacuum to lift dust and grit from the surface and any cracks. Scrub with a concrete degreaser to remove oil, grease and old sealant - this matters a lot in a garage. Rinse with clean water and let the floor dry completely before priming.
PF-05Apply a floor primerBare, dusty or new concrete needs a floor primer or etch primer so the topcoat grips properly. Roll it on evenly in small sections, cutting into edges and corners with a brush first. Leave to dry fully - check the tin, usually 4 to 16 hours - before the next coat.
PF-06Apply the first coat of floor paintStir the floor paint well before use. Cut in around the edges with a brush, then roll the main area in sections, working backwards towards the door so you don't paint yourself into a corner. Leave to dry fully - most floor paints need 16 to 24 hours - before recoating.
PF-07Apply the second coatOnce the first coat is completely dry, check for thin patches, missed spots or roller marks. Apply a second even coat the same way, again working towards the door. Two coats give a much harder, more even finish than one and will wear far better underfoot.
PF-08Leave to cure and reinstate the roomKeep the room ventilated and keep foot traffic off the floor for at least 24 hours. Keep heavy furniture off for up to 7 days - check the tin for the exact cure time, as this varies by product. Peel off the masking tape once the paint is touch-dry, then clean your brushes and rollers.
