Put up acoustic panels on a timber stud wall

Plan panel spacing, find your studs safely, and fix each acoustic panel securely and level for a tidy finish.

AP-01Clear the area and prepareMove furniture away from the wall and lay a dust sheet on the floor. Wipe the wall down so it's free of dust and grease. Unpack the panels and check each one for damage before you start, since it's easier to swap a faulty panel now than once it's on the wall.

AP-02Plan the layout and mark level linesDecide on your pattern by laying panels out on the floor first. Measure the wall and mark a level horizontal line for the bottom row using a spirit level, not by eye. Mark the centre point of each panel position on the wall in pencil.

AP-03Work out what's inside your wallRun a detector over the wall, then confirm with a magnet or by tracking a line of screw heads under the surface — that line usually marks a stud. Tap along the wall: a dull thud means solid backing (a stud, or masonry), a hollow sound means plasterboard with a gap behind. Drill a small pilot hole at a fixing point and check what comes out: pale timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and thick brick or block dust means solid masonry behind plasterboard (dot-and-dab) or no stud wall at all. If the wall has a slight give or bounce and the house predates the 1930s, you may have lath and plaster — fixings need to catch a lath, not just the plaster skin.
AP-04Find and mark your fixing pointsLocate studs at roughly 400mm to 600mm centres and mark their positions in pencil where each panel will sit. Line up your panel layout so at least one fixing per panel lands on a stud where possible. If a panel must be fixed only into plasterboard between studs, note this now so you use the right fixing later.
AP-05Safety check before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones' — a detector helps but can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or confused by a metal stud frame. Before drilling, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
AP-06Fix into a timber studDrill a 2mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud to stop the screw splitting the timber. Drive a 4mm x 40mm wood screw straight into the pilot hole until the head sits flush with the panel or bracket. This is the strongest fixing point on a stud wall, so use it wherever your layout allows.

AP-07Fix into a metal studNever use a plain plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — it strips straight through the 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud screw, which cuts its own thread into the steel, or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor if you need to fix between the flanges. Drive it steadily and stop as soon as it's tight; overtightening can still spin the fixing out of thin steel.

AP-08Fix between studs, into plasterboard onlyWhere a fixing must land between studs, use a toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for at least double the panel's weight, not a basic picture hook. This is fine for lightweight acoustic panels, but never rely on plasterboard alone for anything heavy or anything that will pull away from the wall in use. If your wall is dot-and-dab, a plasterboard toggle sits in the void behind the board and won't reach the masonry — for anything above a light panel, use a fixing long enough to pass through the board and adhesive dabs into the solid wall behind, typically 60-75mm.

AP-09Hang and level the first panelOffer the panel up to its marked position and fix it at the top two points first, checking with a spirit level before fully tightening. Fix the remaining corners once you're happy it's straight. This first panel sets the reference for every one after it, so get it right before moving on.

AP-10Fit the remaining panelsWork outward from the first panel, using a spacer or off-cut to keep gaps consistent between panels. Re-check level every two or three panels, since small errors add up across a wall. Keep switching fixing type as needed depending on whether each point lands on a stud or on bare plasterboard.

AP-11Tidy up and final checkVacuum up drilling dust from the floor and skirting, and fold away the dust sheet. Push gently on each panel edge to check nothing is loose. Bin any off-cuts and packaging, and put fixings you didn't use back in their labelled box for next time.
