Put up acoustic panels on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Mount acoustic panels safely and level, checking what's behind your wall before you drill or fix anything.

AP-01Plan the layout and check the panelsLay the panels out on the floor first to work out the arrangement and gaps before anything touches the wall. Measure the wall and mark a centre line so the finished layout is balanced. Check the weight of each panel — most acoustic panels are light, but confirm how many fixing points each one needs.

AP-02Work out what's actually behind the plasterboardTap the wall along your planned fixing line. A dull, patchy sound with occasional solid thuds means dot-and-dab plasterboard on masonry. A fully hollow sound every 400-600mm with a firmer knock in between usually means a timber or metal stud wall — run a magnet or stud detector along the line, and check whether a small pilot hole brings out timber dust or fine steel swarf to tell the two apart. A fully solid sound everywhere means solid brick or block; a slightly springy, uneven surface on an older wall may be lath and plaster. Mark what you find in pencil so you don't forget by the time you drill.

AP-03Find pipes and cables before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones' — run your detector over every planned fixing point, but still expect something could be there even if it shows clear. Detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or if you're working on a metal stud wall which confuses cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.

AP-04Mark up fixing points and check levelHold each panel in position (or use a paper template) and mark the fixing points through it. Use a spirit level to keep the top edges level across the whole layout, not just each panel on its own. Double-check your marks against the stud, dab or solid areas you found earlier.

AP-05Fix into solid brick, block or dot-and-dabFor solid brick or block, drill a 6mm hole to 40mm depth, fit a 6mm wall plug and drive in a 40mm screw. For dot-and-dab, drill a small pilot hole first: if dust stops after 10-15mm you've hit a solid dab and can fix as for masonry; if the drill runs free for 20-50mm you're in the hollow void behind the board, so use a longer fixing — at least 75mm — that passes through the gap and grips the masonry behind, such as a frame fixing or a long hollow-wall anchor.

AP-06Fix into timber or metal stud wallsConfirm a stud wall by the hollow sound every 400-600mm and a line of screw heads under the paint. For a timber stud, drive a 40mm wood screw into its centre. For a metal stud, never use a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel — use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor made for metal track instead. Between the studs, where there's only plasterboard, a toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the panel's weight is fine for light acoustic panels, but a metal stud alone will not hold anything heavy or anything that pulls on the wall — for those you need a timber noggin or pattress fitted between the studs, or a fixing through to the masonry behind.

AP-07Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster walls (common pre-1950s) feel slightly springy when tapped and have thick, uneven plaster over thin timber strips. Avoid ordinary wall plugs, which can crack the brittle plaster — use a fine-thread screw fixing long enough to reach the laths, or a hollow-wall toggle rated for plasterboard-style walls, and drill pilot holes gently to stop the plaster crumbling. Where you can, aim your fixings into the timber studs behind the laths, roughly every 400mm, for extra strength.

AP-08Hang the first panel and check itFit your chosen fixing, then hang the first panel on its clip or hook. Check it's level and sitting flush against the wall before moving on. Use this panel as your reference point for the rest of the layout.

AP-09Fit the remaining panelsWork outwards from the first panel, keeping consistent gaps between panels — 10mm is a common spacing. Recheck level every couple of panels, since small errors add up across a run. Repeat the correct fixing method from earlier for each new fixing point, based on what's behind the wall at that spot.

AP-10Check, tug-test and tidy upGive each panel a gentle tug at its fixing points to make sure nothing is loose or moving. Stand back and check the whole layout is level and evenly spaced. Vacuum up plaster or brick dust, wipe down the wall, and dispose of packaging and offcuts.
