Replace a ceiling pendant light fitting

Turn off the lighting circuit safely, take down the old pendant fitting, and wire in a replacement to the ceiling rose.

RCL-01Gather tools and check the new fittingLay everything out before you start: new pendant fitting, screwdrivers, wire strippers, a voltage tester, and a dust sheet under your work area. Check the new fitting's instructions and terminal layout against the old one so you know what to expect. If the new fitting is heavier than the old one, note this now — it affects the fixing you need later.

RCL-02Isolate the circuit at the consumer unitSwitch the light off at the wall switch first, then go to the consumer unit and switch off the MCB for that lighting circuit. Many houses run all upstairs or all downstairs lights on one circuit, so check carefully which one it is. Leave a note or tape over the switch so no one turns it back on while you're working. Replacing a light fitting like-for-like is not notifiable work under Part P, but altering the circuit, adding a new switch position, or working in a bathroom zone is treated differently.

Part P of the Building Regulations covers electrical work in dwellings. Simple like-for-like fitting replacement is not notifiable, but new circuits, new locations, or bathroom zone work are.

RCL-03Prove the circuit is deadUse your voltage tester to check the wires at the rose are genuinely dead before you touch anything. Test the tester on a known live source first, then on the wires, then on the known live source again to confirm the tester itself still works.
RCL-04Set up your steps safelyPosition your steps directly under the fitting on firm, level ground, with someone nearby if possible. You'll need both hands free to support the fitting as you disconnect it, so make sure you're stable before you start.
RCL-05Take down the old fittingSupport the weight of the old fitting with one hand, then loosen the rose cover and slide it down the flex. Take a photo of the wiring before you disconnect anything — note which terminal each coloured wire sits in, especially if it's an older loop-in rose with several cables. Label the wires with tape if it's not obvious, then disconnect and lower the old fitting.
RCL-06Work out what's above the ceilingBefore drilling anything, remember cables and pipes can run almost anywhere, even overhead — use a detector, but still expect something to be there and prove otherwise before you drill. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe above a bathroom. The circuit should already be isolated at the consumer unit from step RCL-02; if there's any doubt about what you're drilling into, leave it off until you're sure. Track along the ceiling with a detector or magnet to find the joist or metal channel line, listen for a duller sound over solid timber compared with a hollow sound between joists, and drill a small pilot hole to check: timber dust means a joist or batten, fine grey swarf means a metal furring channel.

RCL-07Fit the right fixing for your ceilingOn a timber joist ceiling, screw the new baseplate or pattress straight into the joist with wood screws — this is the strongest option and preferred for anything heavier than a bare bulb holder. On a metal furring channel or resilient bar ceiling (common in flats and refurbished rooms), use self-drilling metal fixings made for steel — never a plain wall plug or wood screw, they strip straight through. If the fixing point falls on bare plasterboard between joists, use a hollow-wall toggle fixing rated for the fitting's weight, though a joist fixing is always better for a pendant. On a solid brick or block ceiling (rare, but found in some basements and older flats), drill a 6mm hole, insert a wall plug, and use a screw long enough to seat fully in the masonry. If the ceiling is dot-and-dab plasterboard on a hidden frame, the screw must be long enough to pass through the board, clear the adhesive dabs, and bite into the joist or frame above — a short screw into the dab alone will fail. On lath and plaster ceilings, drill gently to avoid cracking the surrounding plaster, and find the joist behind the laths rather than fixing into the laths themselves, which will crumble under load.

RCL-08Wire in the new fittingMatch the new fitting's terminals to your photo and labels from step RCL-05: earth (green/yellow) to earth, neutral (blue, or black on older cable) to neutral, and live or switched live (brown, or red on older cable) to the correct terminal. Strip and trim any wires that need it, and make sure every connection is tight with no bare copper showing outside the terminal.

RCL-09Secure the fitting and fit the bulbLift the new fitting into place and screw it onto the fixing from step RCL-07, tucking the wires in neatly so nothing is trapped or under strain. Fit the bulb and shade once the baseplate is fully secure.

RCL-10Restore power and testGo back to the consumer unit, remove your warning note, and switch the MCB back on. Turn the light on at the wall switch and check it works properly, then switch it off and on again to be sure the connection is solid.
RCL-11Tidy upFold away your steps, pack up your tools, and dispose of the old fitting responsibly — most councils treat light fittings as small electrical waste, not general rubbish. Wipe down the dust sheet and check the floor below for any dropped screws or debris.
