Replace an outdoor light fitting like-for-like

Turn off the power, swap your outdoor light fitting like-for-like, then test it safely once reconnected.

OL-01Buy a matching fitting and gather your toolsTake a photo of the old fitting or note its make and model, then match the new one on backplate size, cable entry position, and IP rating. Outdoor lights need at least IP44 (splashproof) - check the box. Get a voltage tester, insulated screwdrivers, a drill with a masonry bit, and outdoor-rated silicone sealant before you start.

OL-02Isolate the circuit at the consumer unitFind the MCB or fuse feeding the outdoor light - it may be labelled or shared with a socket circuit. Switch it off, then use your voltage tester at the fitting to prove it's dead before touching any wires. If the consumer unit isn't clearly labelled, switch off the main switch too while you work.

OL-03Take down the old fitting and note the wiringUnscrew the backplate and let the fitting hang on its cables. Photograph the wiring before you disconnect anything, noting which terminal takes live (brown), neutral (blue) and earth (green/yellow). Undo the terminals and lower the old fitting clear of the wall.
OL-04Work out what's behind the wall before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just where you'd expect - use a detector, but still treat the wall as live until a small test hole proves otherwise. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns before drilling, in case you clip a pipe. If there's any doubt, keep the circuit isolated at the consumer unit while you drill. Most outdoor lights sit on solid brick, block or render: drill with a 6mm masonry bit to about 30-40mm deep. If yours is on a timber soffit or fascia, skip the plug and drive a wood screw straight into the timber. On a stud-built porch wall, find the studs by tracking screw heads with a magnet or detector, listening for the hollow sound between them, and checking whether a pilot hole brings out timber dust (timber stud) or fine grey swarf (metal stud) - metal studs need a self-drilling metal-stud fixing, never a plastic plug or wood screw, which will strip straight through 0.5mm steel.

OL-05Drill new fixing points if the holes don't line upIf the new backplate's holes don't match the old ones, mark and drill new fixing points using the method for your wall type above. Once the new fitting is mounted, fill the old, unused holes with a dab of exterior filler or silicone so water can't track in behind the wall.

OL-06Wire in the new fittingMatch the new terminals to your photo: brown to live, blue to neutral, green/yellow to earth. Use a moisture-resistant connector block if you need to join or extend any flex, and never leave bare copper exposed. This is a like-for-like swap on an existing circuit, which is normally exempt from Part P notification - but if you're changing the cable route, adding a new circuit, or unsure about the existing wiring's condition, get a registered electrician to check it.

Part P of the Building Regulations covers electrical work in England and Wales. Like-for-like replacement of a fitting is normally exempt, but any new circuit or altered wiring in this location must be notified or done by a registered electrician.

OL-07Mount the fitting and seal itScrew the backplate to the wall using the fixings chosen for your wall type, tuck the cable in neatly, and clip the fitting closed. Run a bead of outdoor silicone sealant around the top and sides of the backplate, leaving the bottom open so any water runs off rather than pooling behind it.

OL-08Restore power and testSwitch the circuit back on at the consumer unit and turn the light on at its switch. Check it works properly, then flick it off and on a few times to make sure the RCD doesn't trip. A trip means a wiring fault - isolate again and check your connections before retrying.
OL-09Tidy up and dispose of the old fittingSweep up any masonry dust and put it in with household waste. Take the old light fitting to a household recycling centre or a shop with a WEEE take-back point - electrical items can't go in general rubbish.
