Replace a pull-cord ceiling switch

Swap a broken pull-cord switch safely, checking your ceiling type and wiring before fixing the new one in place.

AB-01Turn off the power and prove the circuit deadSwitch off the lighting circuit at the consumer unit and remove the fuse, or lock the breaker off if you can. Use your voltage tester on the switch wires to confirm there's no power before you touch anything. Tell anyone else in the house not to turn the power back on while you're working.

KNOW THE RULES

Swapping a switch for the same type in the same place isn't notifiable under Building Regulations Part P. Changing the wiring or moving the switch would be. In a bathroom or shower room, BS 7671 wiring rules require a pull-cord switch rather than a wall switch, because ordinary switches aren't allowed within the splash zones — always fit a pull-cord replacement there, never a rocker switch.

AB-02Set up your ladder and clear the areaStand a stepladder directly under the switch on level ground, with the treads locked out. Clear furniture from below and lay a dust sheet on the floor. Take a torch and your old switch or a photo of it with you, so you can buy a matching replacement if needed.

AB-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a ceiling void, including above bathrooms where a header tank or shower feed may sit. Run a cable and pipe detector over the area, but still assume something could be there — detectors miss deep cables, metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard. Before drilling, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, and make sure the lighting circuit is isolated at the consumer unit as in step one.
AB-04Remove the old pull-cord switchUnscrew the switch cover or backplate from the ceiling. Photograph the wiring before you disconnect anything, noting which wire sits in which terminal. Pull the switch body away, feeding the cable through as you go, then loosen the terminal screws and free the wires.
AB-05Work out what's behind your ceilingRun a magnet or stud detector along the ceiling to find the line of screw heads fixing the plasterboard — this shows you where the joists run. Tap between them: a hollow sound means plasterboard with a void behind, a dead thud means solid concrete. Drill a small pilot hole near the switch position: pale wood dust means a timber joist, fine grey filings mean a metal channel, and soft crumbly white dust means old lath and plaster.
AB-06Choose and fit the right fixing for your ceilingOn a solid concrete ceiling, drill with a 6mm masonry bit to 25mm depth, fit a wall plug, then screw. On plasterboard over a timber joist, drive a 30mm wood screw into the centre of the joist; if you're off the joist, a light pull-cord switch is fine on a spring toggle fixing rated for at least 2kg. On plasterboard over metal joists or channels, never use a wall plug or wood screw — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel — use a self-drilling metal fixing instead. On a ceiling with plasterboard fixed to battens over a void, use a fixing long enough to pass through and grip the timber or masonry behind, typically 60-75mm. On lath and plaster, locate a lath with a pilot hole and use fine screws driven gently to avoid cracking the plaster; if it's crumbly, fix a small timber batten across two joists first and screw into that.

AB-07Wire the new switch to match your photoConnect each wire to the same terminal position you photographed earlier. Push each wire fully into its terminal and tighten the screw firmly, then gently tug each one to check it's secure. If you're fitting a new length of pull-cord flex, knot it inside the switch body so any pulling force doesn't strain the terminals.

AB-08Fix the switch back to the ceilingFeed the pull cord through the switch body and hold it against the ceiling. Drive in the fixings you chose in step six, checking the switch sits flush with no wobble. Fit the cover once it's secure.
AB-09Restore the power and test the switchReplace the fuse or switch the breaker back on at the consumer unit. Pull the cord and check the light comes on and off correctly, and that the switch pulls back smoothly each time. If anything seems wrong, isolate the power again straight away and recheck your connections.
AB-10Tidy up and dispose of the old switchFold away the dust sheet and move your ladder clear. Old plastic switches can go in general waste; older bakelite or ceramic ones can usually go in mixed recycling at a household waste site. Put your tools away and give the area a final check.
