Switch off the oven, let it cool, then fit the correct heat-resistant bulb and test it works.
OB-01Turn off and unplug the ovenSwitch the oven off at the wall socket and unplug it. If your oven is wired directly with no plug, turn off its circuit at the consumer unit instead. Let the oven cool fully before touching anything inside — this can take an hour or more after use.
OB-02Check what bulb you needOven bulbs are special heat-resistant bulbs, usually rated to 300°C, and are not the same as ordinary household bulbs. Check your oven's manual for the exact fitting (commonly E14 or E27 screw) and wattage (typically 15W or 25W). If you're unsure, take the old bulb to a shop to match it exactly.
OB-03Protect the oven interiorLay a tea towel or cloth on the base of the oven in case the glass cover or bulb slips as you work. Have a look at how the light cover is held in place — most twist off, but some have a small screw or clip.
OB-04Remove the glass coverMost oven light covers twist anticlockwise to release. If yours is held by a screw or clip, undo that first. Use an oven glove or dry cloth for grip and to protect your fingers from any residual heat.
OB-05Remove the old bulbGrip the bulb firmly and unscrew it anticlockwise, or pull it straight out if it's a push-fit type. Turn gently and steadily rather than forcing it — bulbs can feel stuck even when they're not. Dispose of the old bulb at a household recycling point, not in general rubbish.
OB-06Fit the new bulbScrew or push the new heat-resistant bulb into place, matching the fitting exactly. Don't overtighten — snug is enough. Try to avoid touching the glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten the bulb's life or cause it to blow when heated.

Check it sits flush and isn't cross-threaded, as a loose cover can rattle or let grease in.
OB-08Test the lightPlug the oven back in, or restore power at the consumer unit. Open the door and switch the light on to check the new bulb works. If it doesn't light, double-check it's fully seated and the correct type.
OB-09Tidy upRemove the cloth from the oven base and wipe away any dust or crumbs disturbed during the job. Pop the old bulb's packaging in the recycling and dispose of the old bulb properly.
