Replace a TV aerial socket faceplate

Swap a cracked or outdated TV aerial faceplate safely, checking your wall type before fitting any new screws.

AB-01Gather your tools and materialsGet everything ready before you start so you're not hunting for tools halfway through. You'll need a screwdriver, a coax cable stripper, the new faceplate, and a stud detector if you're not sure what's behind the wall. Lay a dust sheet under the socket to catch any debris.

AB-02Check what's actually live before you touch anythingA plain TV aerial socket only carries a low-level signal, not mains voltage, so you don't need to isolate the consumer unit just to swap the plate. If your plate is a combined unit with mains sockets or USB ports built in, treat that part as electrical work and switch off that circuit at the consumer unit first. Unplug any signal booster or amplifier on the line so you're not handling a connected cable.

Aerial-only wiring isn't part of the fixed mains installation, so Part P doesn't apply. If your faceplate has mains sockets built in, that side of the job is notifiable electrical work under Part P.

AB-03Remove the old faceplateUnscrew the two fixing screws holding the faceplate to the wall or pattress box. Ease the plate forward gently, it's usually only held on by the coax connector or a spring-clip terminal behind it. Take a quick photo of the wiring before disconnecting it, so you can match it up when fitting the new plate.
AB-04Check the condition of the existing fixingsLook at the two screw holes in the wall. If the screws came out clean and the wall around them feels solid, you can reuse the same holes with the same fixings. If a hole is crumbled, stripped, or the wall feels soft, you'll need a new fixing point a few mm to one side, which means checking what's behind the wall first.
AB-05Work out what's behind the wallRun a stud detector, or a fridge magnet, across the wall near the socket; a line of regularly spaced screw heads under plasterboard usually marks a stud. Tap the wall: a dull thud means solid masonry or a stud right there, a hollow sound means you're between studs. A small pilot hole tells you the rest, fine golden dust means timber, grey metal swarf means a metal stud, and no dust at all with a solid feel points to masonry behind plasterboard-on-dabs.
AB-06Take safety precautions before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, so use a cable and pipe detector but still work as if something might be there. Cheap detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or outside the safe zones, and a metal stud frame confuses them further. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns before you start. If there's any doubt at all, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
AB-07Fit the right fixing for your wall typeIn solid brick or block, drill a 6mm hole around 40mm deep, fit a plastic wall plug, and use a No.8 x 32mm screw. Into a timber stud, skip the plug and screw a No.8 x 35mm wood screw straight into the centre of the stud. Into a metal stud, never use a wood screw or a plain plastic plug, they strip straight through 0.5mm steel, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a small hollow-wall toggle instead. Through dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to pass through the board and the dab and bite into the masonry behind, typically 50-60mm. On lath and plaster, the lath is brittle, so use a spring toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the wall rather than a standard plug, which can crack the plaster.

AB-08Connect the coax cable to the new faceplateStrip back about 10mm of the outer coax sheath, taking care not to nick the inner conductor. Connect it to the new faceplate exactly as the old one was wired, matching your photo, usually a screw terminal or a push-fit F-connector. Push the connector fully home so there's no play in the joint.
AB-09Screw the new faceplate to the wallLine the faceplate up over the wiring or pattress box and feed the cable in neatly so it isn't pinched. Fit the two screws using the fixing you chose for your wall type, and don't overtighten plasterboard fixings, they can crack the board. Check the plate sits flush and level before you finish.
AB-10Test the signal and tidy upTurn the TV on and check the picture, retuning if the signal seems weak or missing. Vacuum any dust from drilling and wipe down the wall around the new plate. Dispose of the old faceplate and any offcuts of coax.
