Swap worn patio door rollers by lifting the sliding panel out, fitting new rollers, then adjusting for a smooth, sealed slide.
PD-01Check the fault and buy matching rollersSlide the door and feel for grinding, dragging or the panel dropping at one end - classic signs of worn rollers. Note the make of door and any part number on the roller housing, or take the old roller to a hardware shop or online supplier to match it. Buy a matching pair, since both wheels on that panel have usually worn together.

PD-02Clear the track and set up your workspaceRemove the fly screen if fitted, then vacuum out grit, dead insects and old wheel debris from the track. Lay out a screwdriver set and a padded blanket or old towels to protect the glass once the panel is out. Get a second person to help - even a small patio door panel is heavy and awkward to handle alone.
PD-03Wind the rollers down before liftingFind the adjustment screws near the bottom corners of the door panel - usually a slotted or hex screw accessible from the edge. Turn each one anticlockwise to lower the rollers as far as they'll go. This drops the panel slightly and gives you the clearance you need to lift it out of the track.
PD-04Lift the door panel out of the trackWith the rollers wound down, tilt the top of the panel inwards away from the frame, then lift the bottom edge clear of the track. Work with your helper, one person each side, and keep fingers clear of the frame edges. Lay the panel flat, glass face up, on the padded blanket rather than bare floor or concrete.
PD-05Remove the worn roller unitsUndo the fixing screws holding each roller housing to the bottom rail of the door - usually two screws per roller. Slide the old roller unit out of its housing. Check the rail and housing for rust, cracked plastic or bent metal, and clean out any built-up grit before fitting the new one.
PD-06Fit the new rollersSlide the new roller unit into the same housing and secure it with the original screws, or the ones supplied with the kit. Wind each new roller fully down before refitting the panel so it doesn't catch or foul the track edge as the door goes back in.
PD-07Refit the door panelWith your helper, lift the panel back up, tilt the bottom rail into the track first, then push the top into the frame. Check the panel sits square in the opening and isn't fouling the frame or the fixed panel next to it.
PD-08Adjust roller height for a smooth, sealed slideSlide the door fully open and shut a few times. Turn each adjustment screw a little at a time to raise or lower that side until the door runs smoothly, sits level in the frame, and the weather seal presses evenly along its length. A small difference side-to-side is normal - keep adjusting until it stops dragging or rattling.
PD-09Test, lubricate and tidy upRun the door open and closed several more times to check the action is consistent. Spray a light silicone lubricant onto the track and roller wheels - avoid oil, which attracts grit and makes the problem worse. Refit the fly screen, vacuum the track area one last time, and dispose of the old rollers.
