Set up a smart plug so you can control an appliance from your phone or a schedule.
SP-01Check compatibility before you startSmart plugs work on 2.4GHz WiFi only, not 5GHz, so check your router's settings first. Look at the rating plate on the plug for its maximum load, usually 10A or 13A (2300-3000W), and never use it for anything above that. Check it fits your UK 3-pin socket without blocking the socket next to it.
SP-02Download the app and create an accountDownload the manufacturer's app from the official app store on your phone. Create an account with your email address, this is needed to control the plug remotely and get updates. Keep the password somewhere safe, you'll need it again if you change phones.
SP-03Plug it into the wall socketPush the smart plug straight into a wall socket, not into an extension lead or multi-way adaptor unless the instructions say this is fine. Switch the socket on at the wall. Keep it clear of curtains, water and direct sunlight.
SP-04Put it into pairing mode and connect to WiFiMost plugs go into pairing mode on their own when first powered, shown by a fast-flashing light. If not, press and hold the button on the plug for about 5 seconds. In the app, choose 'add device' and enter your 2.4GHz WiFi password carefully, then wait for the app to confirm it's online.
SP-05Name the plug and assign a roomGive the plug a clear name such as 'Lamp - living room', not the generic default. This makes it much easier to find and control by voice once you own more than one.
SP-06Test that it actually worksSwitch the plug on and off from the app and check the appliance responds each time. Also press the physical button on the plug itself, this should still work even if your WiFi goes down.
SP-07Set a schedule or automationIn the app, set times for the plug to turn on and off automatically, such as a lamp at dusk. Do not schedule anything that needs supervision while it's on, such as a heater or iron, smart plugs should never run these unattended. Check the schedule works correctly for a day before relying on it.
SP-08Link to a voice assistant (optional)If you use Amazon Alexa or Google Home, open that app and link the smart plug's skill or service using the same account details. This lets you control the plug by voice. Skip this step if you don't use a voice assistant.
SP-09Tidy up and do a final safety checkMake sure the plug sits flush in the socket and nothing pulls on the cable. Never use it with an appliance over its rated load, and never leave a smart-plugged heater, iron or hob running unattended, even on a schedule. Keep the packaging or instructions somewhere safe in case you need to reset it later.
