Tile a kitchen splashback

Tile a kitchen splashback in a day, fixing a temporary batten, laying tiles safely, then grouting and sealing edges.

TKS-01Clear and protect the work areaRemove the kettle, toaster and anything else sitting in front of the splashback area. Cover the worktop and hob with a dust sheet and mask the edges of cupboards next to the tiling area. Give the wall a wipe down to remove grease so adhesive can grip properly.

TKS-02Isolate the power and loosen socket faceplatesIf a socket sits within the splashback area, switch off that circuit at the consumer unit before touching it, and check it's dead with a socket tester. Loosen the faceplate screws so the plate sits forward without disconnecting any wiring, so tiles can slot behind it later. Do not remove the wiring itself.

Loosening and refitting an existing socket faceplate like this is not notifiable under Part P. Any new wiring, a new circuit, or moving a socket would need to meet Part P of the Building Regulations.

TKS-03Work out what's behind the wallTap along the wall above the worktop: a dull, solid thud means brick or block, a hollow sound means a stud wall or dot-and-dab. Run a magnet or stud detector along the surface — regular hits every 400-600mm show timber or metal studs behind plasterboard. A small pilot hole tells you more: pale timber dust means a wood stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and brick or block dust means solid masonry. If the house pre-dates the 1960s and the wall feels soft with a fine crackled surface, it may be lath and plaster, which crumbles easily.

TKS-04Fix a temporary support battenA batten screwed level along the wall holds your first row of tiles straight while the adhesive grips, and comes off once it's cured. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, and know where your consumer unit is, in case you hit a pipe or cable. Use a cable and pipe detector along the fixing line, but still treat the wall as if something could be there — detectors miss deep cables, cables in conduit, and anything behind metal-backed board. If in doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into a wall that could carry pipework. In solid brick or block, drill 6mm holes 40mm deep and fit a wall plug with a 40mm screw. In a timber stud wall, drive a 40mm wood screw into the centre of the stud. In a metal stud wall, use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or a proper hollow-wall toggle fixing — never a wood screw or plastic plug, both strip straight through 0.5mm steel. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to pass through the board and the adhesive dab into the masonry behind, typically 60-75mm. On lath and plaster, screw into a lath timber where you can find one, or use a plaster-rated hollow-wall fixing, and work slowly as the plaster can crumble.

TKS-05Mix the tile adhesiveMix the adhesive to a smooth, buttery consistency following the pack instructions — lumps or a sloppy mix make tiles slip. Only mix as much as you can use in 20-30 minutes before it starts to go off. Comb it onto the wall in ridges with a notched trowel, working in small sections.

TKS-06Lay the main tilesStart your first full tile on top of the batten, pressing it into the adhesive with a slight twist to bed it in. Work along the row, then up, using 2mm spacers at every join to keep lines straight. Check each tile with a spirit level as you go, and wipe off any adhesive that squeezes into the joints before it sets.

TKS-07Cut tiles for edges and socketsMeasure and mark any tiles that need to fit around the socket, at the ends of the run, or against the worktop. Cut whole tiles with your tile cutter, and use a tile nibbler or hand file for small notches around socket edges. Leave a 2-3mm gap where tiles meet the worktop and end walls for grout and sealant — never push tiles up tight against another surface.

TKS-08Remove the batten and fill the gapLeave the adhesive to cure fully — check the pack, but allow at least 12-24 hours before removing the batten. Unscrew it carefully so you don't knock the tiles above, then fill the gap along the bottom row with adhesive and your remaining cut tiles.
TKS-09Grout the splashbackOnce the adhesive has fully cured, push grout into every joint with a rubber grout float, working diagonally across the tiles. Wipe off the excess with a damp sponge before it dries hard, then buff the surface with a dry cloth once it has hazed over.

TKS-10Seal the edges with siliconeRun a bead of kitchen-grade, mould-resistant silicone sealant along the top edge where tiles meet the worktop, and along any exposed end edges. Smooth it with a wet finger or a sealant tool for a neat, waterproof finish. Leave it to cure fully before letting water splash on it — check the tube for timing.

TKS-11Refit sockets and clean upOnce the grout and sealant have cured, switch off the circuit at the consumer unit again, tighten the socket faceplate back down, then restore power and test it with a socket tester. Remove masking tape and dust sheets, and give the tiles a final wipe with a soft cloth.
