Assemble a bunk bed safely

Assemble a flatpack bunk bed, fit the guard rails correctly, and anchor it to the wall safely.

BB-01Unpack and check all the partsLay every panel, rail, slat and bag of fixings out on the floor and tick them off against the parts list in the manual. It's much easier to sort a missing or damaged part now than halfway through the build. Clear a space near the final position, since a built bunk bed rarely fits back through a doorway.
BB-02Build the two end framesBolt the head and foot panels for the bottom bunk together with the cam locks and Allen key supplied, following the hole pattern in the manual. Repeat for the top bunk end panels. Snug every bolt by hand first, then fully tighten once the frame sits square, so the holes aren't forced out of line.

BB-03Join the side rails and stand the bottom bunkFit the long side rails between the two end panels using the hook-and-slot or bolted joints shown in the manual. Stand the frame up and measure both diagonals corner to corner - they should match within 5mm, or the frame is racked out of square. Fully tighten every fixing before continuing.
BB-04Fit the top bunk side rails and guard railsRepeat the side-rail assembly for the top bunk, then fit the fixed guard rail along both long sides, leaving only the ladder gap open. Check the gap between guard rail slats or bars is no wider than 75mm before you tighten anything fully, using the manual's spacing as a guide.

Bunk beds sold in the UK must meet BS EN 747-1/2: continuous guard rails on every side except the ladder gap, with no gap wider than 75mm.

BB-05Join the two bunks and fit the ladderLift the top bunk frame onto the bottom bunk's corner posts and bolt through the joints from the inside, where the fixings won't show. Fit the ladder into its hooks or slot at the angle shown in the manual, then climb the first two rungs to check it doesn't rock or slip.
BB-06Fit the base slats or boardsLay the slats or base boards across the bottom bunk's rails and screw or clip them in place, working from one end to the other. Repeat for the top bunk. Push down in the centre of each base - it shouldn't flex more than a few millimetres.

BB-07Decide whether to anchor the bed to the wallCheck the manual for an anti-tip strap or bracket - many bunk beds include one that fixes the headboard end to the wall, and some retailers make this a guarantee condition. Fit it even if the frame already feels solid: children climbing and jumping can rock a freestanding bunk enough to tip it.
BB-08Work out what's behind the wallRun a stud detector or a strong magnet along the wall where the strap will fix. A magnet grabs the screw heads holding plasterboard to a metal stud but only finds occasional nail heads on a timber one; a dull, deep-sounding tap between hollow spots suggests dot-and-dab or solid masonry behind, and an old wall with a springy, slightly hollow feel and light give is likely lath and plaster. Drill a small 3mm test hole in an inconspicuous spot: fine white dust with a solid stop is masonry, timber dust and shavings is a timber stud, and grey metal swarf is a metal stud track.

BB-09Check for cables and pipes before you drillSweep the fixing point with a cable and pipe detector, then still treat it as if something is there - detectors miss cables that run deep, sit in metal conduit, hide behind foil-backed plasterboard, or fall outside the usual safe zones, and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can cut the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry it.
BB-10Fit the right wall fixing for your wall typeSolid brick or block: drill a 6mm hole to 40mm depth, push in a plastic wall plug, and drive in the screw supplied. Timber stud: drive a 4mm x 50mm wood screw straight into the centre of the stud, no plug needed. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud toggle fixing rated at least 20kg - never a wood screw or plastic plug, since either strips straight through 0.5mm steel. Dot-and-dab plasterboard: use a fixing 60-75mm long to reach through the board and the adhesive dabs into the masonry behind, or a heavy-duty plasterboard toggle if you can't reach it. Lath and plaster: find a lath edge with a bradawl, or use a spring toggle that spreads the load across several laths.

BB-11Fit mattresses and give the frame a push testFit mattresses matching the sizes given in the manual - a top bunk mattress that's too thick leaves the guard rail with less than 160mm of clearance above it, which isn't safe. Climb the ladder and firmly push the frame from several angles, then re-check every visible bolt is still tight.

BS EN 747 requires the guard rail on a top bunk to stand at least 160mm above the top of the mattress, so check mattress thickness against the manual.

BB-12Tidy upCollect all cardboard and packaging for recycling, and keep spare fixings in a labelled bag in case you need to retighten the frame later. Vacuum up any drilling dust and wipe the frame down before it goes into use.
