Choose shelf brackets for the load

Work out your wall type and load, then pick and fit the right bracket fixings safely.

SB-01Work out what the shelf needs to holdGuess the heaviest load the shelf will ever carry, not just what it holds on day one. For light items (ornaments, small plants) up to about 5kg per bracket, a basic bracket is fine. For books, crockery or anything heavier, use a stronger bracket and space brackets closer together, roughly every 450-600mm along the shelf. Always use at least two brackets per shelf, even for short shelves.

SB-03Work out what's behind your wallRun a stud detector across the wall where you plan to fix. A steady, even sound with no gaps and no metal signal usually means solid brick or block. A hollow sound that changes every 400-600mm, with a magnet or detector picking up screw heads in a line, means plasterboard on timber or metal studs. Drill a small pilot hole in a spot you'll cover with a bracket: timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud. If the board sounds hollow everywhere with no regular stud pattern, and pushing a bradawl in finds a hard, slightly springy backing a short distance in, you likely have dot-and-dab plasterboard over masonry. Older houses (pre-1930s) with an uneven, slightly bouncy wall and a criss-cross pattern felt through a pilot hole usually have lath and plaster.
SB-04Safety check before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, and detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board. A metal stud frame can also confuse a cheap detector. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and only re-energise it once you're sure the wall is clear.
SB-05Mark and level the bracket positionsHold a bracket against the wall at the height you want and mark the top screw hole with a pencil. Use the spirit level to mark a second position at the same height for the other bracket, and any middle bracket for a long shelf. Double-check the line is level before you drill anything.
SB-06Fix brackets into solid brick or blockDrill with a masonry bit sized to your wall plug, typically 6mm for a light shelf or 7-8mm for a heavier one, to a depth of 40-50mm. Push in a wall plug flush with the surface, then drive in the screw. Wear eye protection, and expect some dust even with a dust-free drill bit.

SB-07Fix brackets into plasterboard on timber studsUse your earlier stud check to find the centre of the timber stud, not just the edge. Drill a small pilot hole (2-3mm) into the centre of the stud, then drive in a wood screw. This gives a strong fixing directly into solid timber, no plug needed.

SB-08Fix brackets into plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plain plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud, they strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the weight. A metal stud will not hold a heavy load or anything that pulls away from the wall in use; for that, fit a timber noggin or pattress between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind.

SB-09Fix brackets into dot-and-dab plasterboardBehind dot-and-dab there's a gap of 20-40mm between the board and the masonry wall, filled by adhesive dabs, not a solid surface. Use a fixing long enough to pass through the board and gap and still bite 30-40mm into the masonry, typically 75-90mm long with a matching wall plug. Drill slowly and expect a brief hollow feel before the bit reaches the solid wall behind.

SB-10Fix brackets into lath and plasterOld lath and plaster is fragile and crumbles easily, so keep loads light and find solid timber behind it rather than fixing into plaster alone. Use a bradawl or stud detector to locate a timber lath or joist, then drill a pilot hole and use a wood screw into that timber. If the plaster around the hole crumbles, patch it with a little filler once the bracket is fixed.

SB-11Fit the brackets and shelfScrew each bracket to the wall using the fixing method for your wall type. Rest the shelf on the brackets, check it's level end to end, then screw the shelf down into the brackets from underneath.

SB-12Test the load and tidy upPress down firmly on the shelf and check it doesn't move or flex at the wall. Add the heaviest items gradually rather than all at once. Vacuum up dust, wipe down the wall and put spare fixings somewhere you'll find them again.
