TS-03Check for cables and pipes before you touch a drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones. Use a detector, but still treat every hole as if something could be there — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or outside the normal zones, and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors even more. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
