FB-02Check for cables and pipes, and know how to shut things offBefore you drill anything, run a detector over the wall where the new holes will go. Cables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones', so treat the detector as a first check, not proof — a cable in metal conduit or buried deep can still be missed. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near a socket or light.
